I just inherited the Sony vph-1271q from my brother. It has not been used in about 3 years, and I was told the fans had been replaced in it except for the 2 above the lenses. Anyway, when I fired it up, it looked fine. After I used it to watch a couple movies, I noticed that the right third of the picture was massively deconverging. The same thing was happening on the left third, though the deconvergence was not as bad. This effect sometimes corrects itself, and sometimes will stay that way as long as the projector is on. One friend has suggested that some capacitors in the projector may have dried out over the years it wasn't used, but I just don't know. The guys over on Avsforum have suggested the projector just needs a replacement board, but I don't know how to figure out which board needs to be replaced, and how much it would cost. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can you post a pix of the test grid when good and when deconverged?

I'll try to over the next day or so. It all depends on how the projector is behaving. Thanks.

Okay,
I was finally able to get a picture when the projector is behaving normally. Here are pictures of it when it is deconverging around the right third of the screen, as well as a little on the left, and when it is normal. I have labeled each. I hope this is what is needed to determine the problem. Any further suggestions I will be happy to do.
Thanks.

Do you have the projector square to the screen?

yes, I do. It may not look that way based on the pictures I took, I know they aren't the best quality. Hopefully, they're good enough to figure out this problem. Thanks.

So, when you throw up the crosshatch, is it that red pattern is just getting smaller than the other two?

Yes, but only on the right side of the crosshatch. It starts to happen slightly on the left side sometimes, but that usually corrects itself. The right side will correct itself as well, once in a while, and everything looks normal again.

Okay, it looks like I should try replacing the convergence board in the Sony 1271q. But I've been talking with an aquaintance who has a crt projector (I think he said the brand was Monarch) that he is willing to sell for $200, and has 8" guns compared to the Sony's 7". Would it be wiser to try fixing the Sony first, and if so how costly is a replacement convergence board, or to just replace the Sony with the other projector. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks. | there's no "monarch", it's porbably a Marquee and yes,if it working, you should abolsutely buy it versus fixing the sony.
Although the Sony should be easy to fix. Looks like it has a convergence board as well as optional "point" boards possibly

Thanks for the advice draganm. If it's an easy fix, I'll look into the cost of a new board first, since I don't have to make a decision on the Marquee right away. Thanks again.
