The best argument I ever heard from a pro sound guy that knew what he was doing was:

'You go to any stereo store and buy a $2000 set of speakers. I will take $200 and go to Radio Shack and a lumber store, and I'll build a set of speakers that will sound better than what you bought in the store'.

If you know enough about speaker building, I think the above statement can hold true today, but exchange the words 'Parts Express' with the words 'Radio Shack'. Smile

Curt,

I think your pro sound guy's "build for $200 what you could buy for $2000" thing is stretching it a bit... $200 is a little on the thin side these days to build a decent set of speakers when you figure in all the parts you'll need to do it right, and $2000 will get you a pretty damn nice pair from the store.

Yes, you can build a pretty great set of stereo speakers for not a lot of money - say $300 - but not without spending at least a couple of weekends researching everything, and then another couple of weekends working in the garage to build decent-looking cabinets and putting it all together.

The flip side is that if you're careful, you can still buy very nice commercial speakers that sound great, look great, don't cost a fortune, and don't require several weekends of your life toiling away in the garage with table saw, router, laminate, adhesive, solder iron, etc...

Take the Paradigm SE3's...

Yeah, they're $1400 retail for the pair... Probably $1250-1300 street, and that seems expensive to some, but really - to build something that sounds comparable, you'd have to spend at least half that... Then, you'd have to spend several weekends in the garage with woodworking tools to build a cabinet that probably still won't look as good when you're done.

Heck, a comparable kit from Parts Express with finished cabinets that you just have to screw together would be about a grand...

DIY can be great, but you'd better have some time on your hands.

Oh I know, I know.. I just thought it was pretty profound at the time. Besides, people here are pretty learned when it comes to a/v stuff. He really had the comment aimed more towards someone who had no idea about audio.

And yes, lack of time.. OH I KNOW!!! Smile

Actually as predicted, all the checks that I wanted to get before Christmas showed up this week. Bills are paid, ready to buy parts for what I do have the time for to fix. Smile

I think I am at a point in my life I am willing to consider buying used speakers due to the cost of buying new store speakers. Sure, I know some used product can be considered abused, but if you show up with source, amp, and whatnot to truly demo the speakers you can usually be safe and minimize the surprises when you get them home.

Over the holidays I actually missed out on a pair of digms, but I just couldn't go willy nilly spending spree. Very Happy

Crabb,
See my previous post. I have heard several DIY speakers and could recommend a couple. Besides the two I already have, I would say Zaph's three way with the Dayton RS52 and the Modula Neo CC would be more choices. The Neo might be difficult as the tweeter is hard to find though.

My apologies for reviving such an old thread, but I just joined the forum and this topic caught my eye...

Sorry to hear Klipsch was bought by Audiovox. That's a shame - I always thought they had some very classy looking, impressive sounding speakers.

Didn't Klipsch also own, in part or full, Energy, Mirage and Jamo? If so, I guess they've been subsumed by Audiovox as well?

The Klipsch Palladium series of speakers is almost unbelievably good. Maybe Audiovox wants to get a better reputation by incorporating a high profile brand.

Of the older speakers I still love the European version of the Klipschorn (uses a much better crossover than the US version). The Anniversary Edition of the Klipschorn is even better, especially in the european configuration. Unfortunately I have no way to incorporate a Klipschorn into my room.
So I decided to go for the Klipsch Synergy Series Premium KSP-400 speakers. They are still excellent today.

The buyout of Klipsch would make sense aslo for the fact that Jamo's speaker line this year blows IMHO
