I like the idea! We have 'ranks' here that, other than for Curt and myself, I've never used. I now added a third rank and assigned it to Chris. Take a look at what's now under his name in his posts. Wink

How about Proudly Banned For Life From AVS? I know Tom would love to wear that designer label. Razz

Sorry to hear the bad News Chris,
FWIW they also Band Aussie Bob after GetGray posted A review of Aussie Bobs new Scope lens(CrystalMorphic) & how it compared to the Isco..
But in all fairness to AVS it was A direct competing product that was being promoted on AVS without AVS's permission I assume..

Cheers...

Why would they ban Bob if another member posted a review? That doesn't make sense. I met GetGray at the AVS dinner and he is a nice guy. I doubt he did that on purpose. FYI, Getgray sells the sleds for the lenses, so my guess is he was testing the lens for one of his sleds.

I was booted years ago (Mr Bott did not like my opinion but I broke no rules) and then for some reason got re-instated. Kooky Laughing

sort of OT but what is with all the little links that now randomly pop up in someones post on AVS, random words highlighted in Blue that lead to some product?

I remember when that change took place. It was posted as some sort of "benefit" to the AVS posters. Rolling Eyes

People knew exactly what it was (a way to make money for AVS and nothing more)...then they all posted that it sucked and made the forum worse and they removed the links...I noticed they are back now too...I guess this time the rollout went without announcement.

It's a way to 'monetize' a site. It's usually done through Amazon. You install something that looks for key words and then generates product links to them at Amazon, and every time someone buys something (anything) after clicking through the site gets a small percentage.

I find that it simply does not work at all for the following reasons:

(1) Most of the links are not relevant. They point to a product that is in no way related.
(2) I also find that it confuses the reader as they assume the POSTER put in the link. You end up clicking on it and it's not at all what you think. Frustrating and creates to a poor forum experience.

So I never used it here even when it was first announced. It's simply "too much". (IMHO)

We do have links here but they're all ones I created by hand (one by one). I have the [url=https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=9237.htmlBlu-ray Release List & Must-Have Titles[/url] and banner ads to Amazon products. It has the same result that we get paid a small percentage of anything that someone buys after clicking through. But at least the products are all 100% genuine and real ones that I link to manually. Of course, that's a lot more work! That thing that AVS installed takes 5 minutes to install.

You seriously want this? I can add it, but it'll have to be permanent! I don't want to change names every few days.

(Speaking of which, if you want yours removed Chris, let me know... I added it without you even asking).

Ok, NEW RULE: Anyone who has over 800 posts can ask to have a "name" assigned to them just like this. Just PM me. The caveat is that it better be nearly permanent. I don't want to change 'em every week!

I just used firefox ad-blocker addon, and a couple other specific scripts I had to dig up online to kill those inserted text links. Also killed everything else on the whole site ad-wise, which was nice.

I asked in the support forum once about those, Bott said they were a new "feature" they rolled out and that they felt it wasn't intrusive. I found them horribly annoying.

Yeah those insertion ads are annoying along with the ten seconds to load every page because of all of the other ads.

Hey Chris, I was handled in the opposite manner. I was told publicly by David Bott to leave. And I, too, have over 20K posts on their forum. I am curious to know what monetary benefit they got from all those posts.

I'll stick with between ~2.2-2.6, depending on the display and viewing environment, and a guess about how the content was mastered (which basically boils down to "what seems to look best to me for this movie...")

(occasionally lower than 2.2 in some very bright circumstances)

And to advocate for an actual defined standard for display gamma in a particular and defined viewing environment, which does not presently exist. Poynton advocates standardizing around 2.35, which I think is totally reasonable.

It used to be clear that gamma was closer to 2.4-2.5, which is natural and inherent to a CRT. But due to the move away from CRT, confusion about gamma itself, and no clear display standard, actual mastering studios are all over the place.

Personally, I have two gamma settings on my display, and I just flip between them based on what seems to give the best tradeoff between pop and detail. One is about 2.45, the other is about 2.3.

Oh, but wait I shouldn't be substantive and reasonable, I have to bicker and argue and be an opinionated SOB. So, like totally F you and stuff. Wink
