Since we're talking digital, what's the consensus on Front Projection vs Rear Projection?

My Brother just bought a rear projection TV (55~ish"). He can watch it anytime with windows open and daylight shining in the room. The blacks isn't inky, but it's plenty good enough. Same for video quality. Viewing angle (height) was my only critique, but when sitting on the couch - no problem.
...Other than shear size, it really made me question all my CRT hassles.

Mitsubishi make a few rear projection units up to 82". (TV is 73.2" x 48.5") How much bigger do you (we) need?
I realize the front projection units CAN go bigger, but we are who we are, ...tweakers. You'll be dealing with screen size, screen material, ambient light, upscalers, video wires, this thing-a-ma-bob or another.

Rear Projection doesn't have as much flexibility, which isn't always a bad thing. Plug, play, and watch.
In my opinion, (due to ambient light) front projectors may not have the perceived-blacks that rear projection TVs have.

There's no real question here, other than ...have you considered a rear projection unit?
I'd be interested in your comments.

Well my experience w/ the Mitsu rear pro is great!!! Great Color and clarity.

I want a front projector for the real theater type feel.

Sorry John, I had the model totally wrong. Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 I found it at BB for $1299.

I think a few online places were selling those for $950 or thereabouts when they were first released.

Very tempting for the family room for sure!

You should have went to AVS. They had a VW-60 b stock for $899. It looks like they have some 70s for $1299.

Well, if you haven't bought one yet I saw the VW85 in Wilmington HiFI House last year, it was really, really, really, good. Much better than the Vw60 they also had. The picture was very smooth color rich and had decent blacks in the picture, but no full fade to blacks as expected.

Nearly on par with my 9500 from quality picture with the 85 not the 60.

Best one I saw last year was the Runco/Planar LS3, smokin good picture. Right on par with the 9500 right there except for fftb.

I thought you bought a JVC pj.

THe 60s I am talking about are b-stock. They went fast along with the others. I seriously considered it, but I find very little programming that motivates me to whip out the pj these days.

If bright for parties is what you're looking for, Sony or JVC consumer LCoS is your worst option. Not only are they the dimmest of your alternatives for the application that you're talking about, but you're looking at several years old projectors to stay within your budget. The VW-50s are known to have problems with panel aging as it relates to uniformity, so I'd stay away from them.

Keep in mind I've owned most of JVC's consumer model digitals since the RS1 and I'm a huge LCoS fan for cinema, but in a room with ambient lighting for a party, that tech just can't go as bright as DLP or LCD. DLP is going to give a sharper image and will be much closer to your CRT in terms of motion, but LCD will have much greater placement flexibility. There have already been some great recommendations for both techs here, and if you're open to looking at used there's a lot of great deals on Videogon as well. One standout is an InFocus Screenplay 777 3-chip DLP for sale on there for $3.5k, you might be able to talk the owner down to your price range. That thing is a light cannon, and was one of the top DLPs for a long time until much more expensive 1080p 3-chippers started coming out.

As for the JVC RS20, I still have and use as my primary projector. At $899 I considered it a disposable object to play with and figured I could get $400-500 if I turn around and sold it a month later. I'll use it for D* and Xbox (nothing critical) in the other basement room with good light control.

This allows me to take the other 50" 1080P plasma and put it on the second floor. Like toilets, I am seeking a 2:1 ration between projectors and a-holes in the home. Mr. Green
