Yes, when taking the magnet structure apart, what I do is I take a permanent marker and draw two lines across the entire assembly in a long V shape. When reassembling,
if the V is not a V, you're doing it wrong.
So now we know the KF-3203G yoke is unsuitable for Marquee applications without
both rewinding of the static focus coil and remagnetization to the appropriate strength.

I tried a Focus coil in my 9500 yesterday on the green crt. I used the original casing and I flipped the coil 180 degrees so that it had the same Magnetic polarity as the original Marquee coil. So far everything looks good. I didn't have to rotate the deflection coil at all . Included below is a picture with the coil in place. I will be trying the coils on the rest of the crts this week if I can find the time. I'll get back with some more pictures when I have that done.

Be sure that the screws and nuts you're using to hold the two halves of the housing together are NON-MAGNETIC. Stainless steel or brass.
I recommend that you transfer the coils into Marquee yoke housings as it allows you
to position the focus coils closer to the bell of the tube. This will have an effect on
the focusing ability and range. Alternatively, modding the focus housing to the
same end may be advisable.
It's not as easy to come up with a good solution for recasing the Mark II coils as it
is for the Mark 1 coils, but a satisfactory solution is possible.

I just had a look at the convergence coil and the focus coil .If you remove the clamp that holds the covergence coil there is a plastic sleeve. The 22-22 focus housing would either fit over the plastic sleeve on the convergence coil or I could remove the plastic sleeve. That would move the focus coil at least 1/4" closer to the bell of the tube. The convergence coil is held in place with glue so it does not look like there would be a problem loosing the clamp.

Finally I found some 22-22 yokes, and my 9500 LC Ultra is now equipped with them. Anyone that owns a marquee should do this mod!! We have all seen people complaining that the marquees are dim. Well...Not any more! So what if it eat tubes faster. When that time comes, there will be a digital pj for me that will outperform the Ultra. No doubt. I will do measurements today to determine the increased output. I'm suspecting ~20%.

Lyckman, I thought the Fyokes were supposed to improve focus and sharpness, not increase light output. My 8500 will already pump out 15 ftL or more on an 85" wide screen before it starts to bloom, which is more than I need. I usually run at 12 ftL.
If increased brightness was the only benefit, I'd say "why bother?" unless you're running a really monster screen.

I did the Frankenyoke upgrade to my 8500 and there is a increase in focusing ability. I can also crank my contrast and brightness alot higher than before the upgrade without blooming. The problem with this upgrade on the 8500AC is the lenses can't resolve the higher resolution. On the tube face there are scan lines at 1080p but on the screen, with HD144 lenses the scan lines are not visible. Some secreen shots of my 8500 at 1080p can be seen at
https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=3976.html
I will be upgrading my 8500 to LC and better quality lenses. I am hoping the lense upgrade that is required to go to LC will also help bring some of the sharpness from the tube face to the screen.

Interesting. I wasn't sure about the HD-8b's but I'm surprised even the HD144's won't show the improvements. That pretty much makes it pointless to do this mod, doesn't it? Unless you're looking for increased contrast without blooming?

Just to clarify, I did see some improvement. How much is difficult to quantify and is very subjective, but if asked I would estimate ~5%.
Is this upgrade worth it on an 8500AC....hard to say. As I said I will be upgrading to 8500LC in the very near future. I will have both projectors (8500AC HD144 with Frankenyokes and 8500LC with HD10 lenses and stock focus coils) set up at the same time on the same screen. I will update after the upgrade and setup is complete.
Chris.

Cool.
Looking forward to hearing the result of this comparison.

It will be at least a month before I have finished the upgrade. I am picking up my LC housings next weekend (March 10th), the lenses are currently being shipped, and I will need to fabricate new upper and lower mounting brackets. I will also have to remove my tubes from their AC housings and install them in the LC housings.
Thanks Kal for showing me what a nicly set up LC projector looks like, look at all the work you have created for me.
Chris.

Bah. If you are picking the hardware up next weekend you should be able to have anything finished except the mounting plates by monday.

The mounting plates are the easy part, its the tube swap from the AC housings to the LC housings that will take some time.

That's not hard but boring.
Are the donator LC-chambers still mounted on tubes?

If increased brightness was the only benefit, I'd say "why bother?" unless you're running a really monster screen. |
Light Output
I Run a 88" wide screen (Wilsonart designer white, gain=1.24). Before the mod I was throwing 24 cd/m2 = ~7fL with the 9500 LC/Ultra. The pj has prestine tubes. This is measured at FULL FIELD. Now, with the frankenyokes I get 30cd/m2 = ~8.7fL. The visual difference is obvious!
I had a 8500 before and it gave about 33cd/m2 = ~9.6fL on a 78" wide screen. (full field).
I have compared my colorimeter (xrite DTP-94) with a PR650 and it gave about the same results, so nothing wrong with the measurement hardware.
Before the mod I had max output at Brightness=23, contrast=54 where green drive=95, green g2 = 65. (D65 within Delta 1)
Now I get max output at Brightness=23, contrast=61 where green drive=90, green g2=65. (D65 Delta 1)
If I push harder, there won't be any visible blooming (as before the mod), BUT the gamma curve will suffer. (And the 100% output wont increase anyway).
If you're not running a high gain screen, you'll want more light output!
Focus/Sharpness
I did the focus adjustment at 1080p60. By just using the internal patterns, focus is improved, but not as much as I would have thought. But I think this is due to the video chain. I still have a standard 02P VIM in the machine. Also, I have some optical alignment to do. I recently moved the pj an inch back, and have not had the time to do flapping, plane, etc. (modding is so much more fun to do). Focus seems to be much more uniform over the tubeface.
Astig, flare, triangularity
Now. Here's where it gets really interesting!!
The 22-22 yokes really helps the 6-pole magnets to work as they are supposed to! Even though I connected the stigmator windings, and have the dynamic astig, I did'nt need to adjust it. With the 6-poles I was able to get the dots visually perfectly round and with the stig in dead center. And most importantly. All over the picture. Not just in the center. This is impossible to accomplish with the thomson yokes.
Detail
Since i did not see a stunning focus-improvement, I was not expecting any huge changes in this area, but I was wrong. The detail is very much improved indeed, so the sharpness must be much more improved than I realized before!! I got a favourite chapter in the King Kong HD-DVD, when they realize Ann is missing and they are off to rescue her. It starts with them rowing the longboat to shore and the camera flies over the boat, up over the wall and take a wide turn over the inhabitors "fort". There's a lot of rain/smoke/fog/fire, etc. Before, I have not noticed that there are small mpeg artifacts in the lava-waterfalls. The artifacts was very obvious, and I've seen that scene ~50 times. I think I would have noticed them before.
Overall picture improvement
The increased contrast adds depth to high APL scenes that I have not had before. I always thought that really bright scenes was kind of dull. not any more. An example is in King Kong where they approach the dinosaur valley. That looked kind of flat to me before this mod. Now there's depth. (I have calibrated my lumagen so the gamma is exactly as before eg 2.5, so it's not a gamma issue).
Drawbacks
The 22-22 yokes are fixed around the tube, hence the ability to center raster is *gone*. I found this to be a problem since I have to converge the grids to center tube face instead. As expected, not a good solution. Convergence now tends to drift, and it drifts kind of irratically. Maybe it is better to use the 6-poles for a "fair" center rastering and do dynamic stig instead. I will try that today.
I will take AFTER pictures.. sometime..
