Could be. I remember reading an article about someone who had spent a small fortune on audio gear and the reviewer couldn't believe how bad it sounded. The owner was probably more interested in the status of owning $500k in audio gear.

I saw some of that here, and my Chinese lawyer buddy confirmed that within circles of friends, there's a lot of the 'keeping up with the Joneses' mentality, which is great for business.
I've posted before about the local guy who had at least 500K worth of audio equipment in a 20 X 12 X 7' room. He wanted a Barco 600 projector installed that he'd bought from China and brought it to Vancouver. His audio gear was insane, JBL Everest speakers, Classe amps and a $8000 CD player (this was in 1988), speaker cables the size of my forearm, etc. Multiples of everything, and I mean everything. I think the whole room had 1 15 amp circuit, as it was a really old house to boot.
He didn't like my price to install the Barco projector, so I never went back, but there's no way his room could possibly give him decent sound, but he loved what he had. Too bad we didn't have digital cameras back then, those would have been some great shots.

Wow curt. In 88 a bd600 was great I guess but their is no way you could run it and a audio system like that with only 15 amps. So it was just a install price? Amazing how you can spend so much only to totally blow it in the end over what is probably <1% of what was spent already.

I quoted him $1200 for a mounting bracket, running cable, and selling and mounting a screen.
What I didn't realize is that a lot of Asians are born into a culture where haggling is the norm, so he countered with $800, probably expecting to pay $1000. I refused to move on my price. According to my lawyer buddy, had I quoted $1500, and 'let him' talk me down to $1200, I would have gotten the job. Lesson learned.
