Why upscale dvd? We don't have fixed pixel panels to deal with, I think I'll first try native resolution and upscale only if I see scan lines.
For BD material I know that my PJ will not do 1080p fine, it's a Marquee8000, so I'd like to try 800p72 since Athanasios, in another thread, wrote me that M8000 should be ok for that... if I remember correctly.
So, here comes my question: the theory behind 800p is that with the Lumagen I can crop the black bars away and send only the "real" image to the PJ. This should be Active Area Scanning, right? I've read a couple of threads here and there on the subject.
It applies only to 2,35:1 material, otherwise I'd be erasing the top and bottom parts of the movie. With 16/9 movies, like Avatar, I'll just scale the movie down to 800p and live happy. But how can I know if a movie is 2,35:1 or 16/9 before playing it? The same question applies to dvd materia, and consider that most of my movies are in .ts format.
Thank you very much!
Francesco

The why for upscaling is because when you enlarge the image to 7-8 ft wide and 4-5ft tall you will see the scanlines of the native resolution of DVD [which I think is only 240 lines by the way]. That's a guarantee. You might not notice it now on your 42' diagonal screen. But it will be very apparent on 100" diagonal screen.
Have you decided on what size screen you are going to use for your Marquee? I would suggest 100" diagonal, or less, but opinions vary on that.
720p or 1080i look great at that size.

I think it'll be around 90", more or less... it depends on the available space, still have to make some tests.
