|
|
So I finally have a turntable again, rescued from the dump. It's a Technics 3200, a semi automatic turntable. I've just ordered the counterweight off eBay, should be here in a week. It has some generic cartridge on it, that has been bounced off the turntable mat a few times since the tonearm lock is broken (also on order).
So, I need a new cartridge. Now, I have about 2000 records, most of which came out of nightclubs back when I was DJing. So, they've been played lots, have been backcued, etc.
I used to use a Stanton 680EL, as you can back cue with it, and I'm thinking that's the way to go. I don't want to spend 100s on this, as I'll simply be burning records to CD via my cheapie sound card in my computer.
I do have some records that should be in mint shape and unplayed, but again, as long as I track lightly, I should be fine with a robust cartridge.
It's not a P mount type of cartridge, it uses the 'standard' mount.
Recommendations other than the Stanton? I won't need to back cue I don't think with this turntable..

The model 1 is a great way to maintain your vinyl.

John, I had the lesser Blue Point Special i owned for at least 15 years. I was a duffiss and broke off the needle.
Jerry Raskins has an upgrade program where you send in your cartridge and can upgrade to a rebuilt unit.

Same color too!!! I had to replace the rear wing cause the carbon fiber began to de laminate.
So i had it painted Black and had my side mirrors also painted Black to match the European EVO VIII MR.
Those thingies on the roof are called Vortex Generators and add down force on the rear wing. The dealer
made you watch a video on the Evo to explain things about it and to show you some maintenance procedures.
The way the Vortex Generator works is it causes these swirling vortexes that hit the top of the wings cross fin
adding down force.
I have almost 90k on it since may of 2005.
Love this car.

Dude, dont take me serious... i'm just breaking stones...
Sumiko's are really nice cartridges. I prefer the grado... but i'd be happy w/ either.
I know it's just psychological but.... i just think Jazz sounds better w/ a good turntable setup....
Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue".
Art Blakey's "A night in Tunisia"
Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"
Sonny Rollins "Saxophone Colossus"
Branford Marsalis "Renaissance"
John Pizzarelli "Let there be Love"
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong "Ella and Louis"
There's a good evening of good music.

I had a few different Grados back in the day when I had my Oricle and I liked them. THey weren't the top and they weren't the bottom but they were generally very nice sounding.

Dave Brubeck, cool, I have a few of his CDs. Don't ask which ones as it's been a few years since I've done any serious listening to my system, I know, how bad is that. It seems ever since I got into this CRT thing my serious music listening slipped big time.

Same here, but i want to get back into it. I want to build an all analog front end just for Vinyl. I have a crapy turntable i built myself from an old Kenwood platter and motor. Wood plinth with the turntable and arm mounts isolated from the rest with a silicone barrier. I use a rega RB 300 arm with the BluePoint Special EVO III. The Phono Preamp is a Creek, forgot the model. I want to find an old tube amp and preamp. i have a set of 1957 Accoutic reasearch speakers I got for 20 bucks years ago. I redid the crossover with Solen caps and silver wiring and better inductors and upgraded to a nice soft dome tweeter.

You met BRUBECK!!!!!
Super Cool!!!
I've seen him live, and He's great! I would have loved to see Milt Jackson...
I get to as many good jazz shows as i can. I go to see Branford whenever he's in the area. John Pizzarelli is great live as well.
I saw him at the Carlyle in NYC a couple weeks ago... GREAT place to see a show.
