Boilermaker;
Not extinct yet; we installed a new one in 2001 and used it for testing 9000 hp reactor pump/motor sets. Will probably do the same with the 12000 hp pumps in future as well.
One other thingy; for a boilermaker you seem to be very knowlegable about sparky stuff (i.e. not just sparky tube welding... )

There is probably 9,000 reasons why you don't use SCR's!!!

I've tried welding several times - It isn't as easy as it looks, so I thought I would stick with the sparky stuff.

I posted that last message so quickly this morning that I didn't even bother to ask how I would go about checking for DC. How do I use my meter to check for DC?

If your transformer is a Topaz Escort, it happens to be a Ferro-Resonant transformer - guaranteed to run HOT and LOUD! It is also impossible to wire for balanced output.
A Topaz Ultra Isolation unit will work cool and quiet if used within its ratings, but remember to halve its ratings if wired for balanced output.

Most decent DMM measures DC even with large AC signal.
I would not expect any analogue to work.
A scope with readout should work as well.

Thanks for the information. I did a little research on the Ferro-Resonant transformer and these things are really nice but unfortunately just not for my application. I'm going to call it quits on this one and at some point possibly get around to getting the proper unit for my application.
