Fellas,
I want to drop kick my POS PS3 into the dumpster. It failed on me this past Saturday, right in the middle of a scary movie party. It had been working fine until then, so it was truly impeccable timing. We were downgraded to scaled DVD via my Tosh HDXA2 player. The Horror, The Horror...
My original PS3 blueray ROM failed just outside of factory warranty (of course), and it was the replacement unit they sent to me that lasted just over a year. Because of this poor track record, I am not interested in giving Sony any more money to "fix" this latest PS3 issue.
IT guys are suggesting I build a current generation HTPC. I am somewhat receptive to this, since it was something I was neck deep in back "in the day," when I was using an SDI modded player and a Holo3DGraph card in a PC with a nice vid card. However, I like the tidiness of a nice set top player and I really don't have the time or interest anymore to dink around with a PC.
So, blueray player recommendations? I am willing to spend $1000 on a player, as long as it lasts at least 5 years or more. Gosh, I have a Denon CD player that is now 22 years old and it still works great. Is that totally unrealistic for a high quality blueray player?
Steve

Hey, I refer you to the 'TVs are crap' thread..
Given the state of electronics today, I wouldn't spend $1K on a BR player. I'd look at the Oppo, for a high end player. Or, for $1000 more, you can get the Oppo in a Lexicon case.

The most I had been willing to consider for a Blu-ray player was $300, and that was when it was known to be modifiable to be region-free-for-BD. Unfortunately, Oppo no longer have the Model 80 for sale and it continues to bewilder me why that company continues to advertise the 80 and 83/83SE when they actively state they have ceased production of all of these models and are effectively Sold Out.

If it's the PS3 drive I have a spare if you're interested.

No doubt! Yes, heard many good things about the Oppo.

I very well might. I'll let you know if I end up needing one.

I decided to have a local guy fix the PS3. He identified the power supply as the main culprit, but also recommended installing a new drive. So I paid him to replace both.
I have to admit, I really do like the PS3, so I may still want to take that drive off your hands for a future spare part. Can you send me an email with the amount you'd like to get for it?
How do you rate the Oppo over the PS3?
