|
|
With the Aussie $$$ neck and neck with US$ I'm thinking of getting a G90 with LUGS shipped over, Is there going to be any real benifit to doing this , or is that question a can of worms? The Marquee is fine despite a few minor issues , I don't like the setup procedure much but do like sonys layout . The only thing stopping me from doing this is the beautiful Black Pininfarina case which I love and how quiet it is, how noisy is the G90 ? Just seems to me that the marquee is a tinkerers machine and I'm over tinkering , I just want perfection .
Any thoughts on this decision greatly appreciated
Cheers

Cool now we are in to trading. I will add to Nash's offer of a G90 with a 909 thrown in for good measure.
Seriously, you might be better off spending the money on calibration equipment than shipping pjs across the ocean.

Funny you should mention that, I got a Spyder pro2 the other week and my previous setup with my eyes was nearly bang on 6.5k , Gamma was off though

Don't forget the G90 is WAY brighter too, and usable brightness that doesn't destroy the focus...
If you *can* upgrade to a G90, do it. You won't look back.

Does that mean you aren't color blind like your avatar?

I doubt you have the same choices to a handful of skilled G90 calibrators like we have here in the States, but after years with Marquees, when I switched to the G90 and got it calibrated 5-6 years ago, other than very minor convergence touch-ups when Cliff visits annually, I haven't touched it since it was installed.
But if you plan on doing it yourself, it'll take months of setup tweaking (not internal tweaking or mods like the Marquee) to get far enough up the learning curve to reach even 90% of what the G90 is capable of.

Clarence brings up a good point. Are there any good calibrators in Oz? I think I have read about a couple doing this on the side, but I am not sure who they are. I know Michael Chen of THX recently said that there is only one guy who has went through the THX course, but he isn't certified. If there is anyone else qualified, then I assume he would have mentioned that person. I do know Roger Galvin goes to China to set up G90s for the guy in SanFran. You might be able to piggy back on one of his trips.
As for brightness, has that been confirmed? I understand that it doesn't bloom at higher brightness, but it looks to me that you burn up the tubes quicker.

Yes. And yes.
The G90 will run way brighter, but at said brightness will also go through tubes faster.
On a 96x54 STK130 screen with a 9500 you will get about 8.5 honest flt and with a G90 you will get an honest 13.5+ flt. The G90 will go brighter still, but you really get tube wear that way.

Interesting and probably explains why I have about a "7" green tube with according to previous owner around 1500 hours.

There's always more to things...................
I agree with everything that's been said in this thread, if it's put in the context of "straight out of the box".
Straight out of the box, a G90 is hands down the brightest, sharpest CRT projector ever made.
However, add Mike Parker's latest CLM and VIM mods to a Marquee 9500 Ultra, and all of a sudden you have the highest bandwidth, brightest, darkest, highest resolution (foreground and background) most intense color projecting CRT ever made. And, it doesn't burn up CRTs like a G90 burns up LUGs. To add these mods involves removing the existing CLM and VIM and plugging in the mod'd CLM and VIM, all of about 5 minutes, and no opening up the case. A recalibration, and poof...........done. Check out Mike's latest screen shots in the CurtPalme Screenshot War thread, and the equivalent thread in the CRT Forum on the AVSForums.
Craig, Clarence and Paul are going to have the opportunity to see what I'm talking about on November 13.
And, not in the least, you get to keep that bitchin case.
William

I have to admit, thats the sexiest looking Marquee I've ever seen. Id hate to give that up, but I still dream of the day a G90 sitting in front of me

Yeah! hence the dilema, it looks so cool on the ceilng and the pix is stunning ,could be brighter tho I am running a largeish screen
BTW how does a G90 handle 1920x1080 @ 60hz ?
