man! I've always wanted to visit the old country. I don't speak Italian, so I'm imtimidated on going. I've always wondered if the food is as good as my family's (I'm 100% Italian, so the food is typical italian).

Anyway, silicone those HV leads, or grab a new set from Curt. he has new ones. Your best bet is a Dow Corning silicone RTV, which has a much higher dielectric strength than the GE silicone sold in home improvement stores.

Sparky (btw, perfect name for my problem Very Happy), where is your family from? Don't worry about the language, you'll be ok with English in most big cities: there is a lot of tourism.

Traditional food in Emilia looks like this:

I'm getting hungry now!

Well, I'll search for the right silicone and I'll try to seal those leads. I've also sent an email to Curt asking for some info about new leads, just in case...

No comment about the mafia reply. Embarassed

I admit my ignorance: I don't like cycling and I had to google for those names to find out where they are located... they're based in Veneto, in the north-east part of Italy.
Ferrari & co. are at max. 25km from my girlfriend's house... so I'm literally *between* them: http://tinyurl.com/3977b3y

Francesco,
My grandmother on my dad's side is from Bari, my grandparents on my mom's side, from Treviso. I'm looking forward to taking my first trip some day.

I've definitely have not had dishes like that!

you live in the country with the second and fourth largest bicycle races in the world and you don't like cycling Shocked
I used to love cars but I've come to realize they're just shiny metal boxes and when i'm inside one I feel like i'm in a coffin. A bicycle on the other hand is the greatest machine ever invented by mankind IMO. Wink

I fear that no, I don't like cycling Sad and all that stupid doping keeps me far from it... but this is another question and of course my personal opinion. Anyway, great respect for those who do it without artificial help: I think that cyclers must have a great passion for doing such a hard sport. (I hope you understand what I mean, my english is so bad!)
I used to do some very low level cycling with parents and friends, but now I'm too busy (read: lazy) to do it.

I've installed one of the new tubes, the blue one, but when I powered up the pj I heard a low cracking noise and saw the C (the las one on the right) error light blinking.
I shut it down because I also heard that noise just before having a spark with the old tube, so I fear that I could have the same problem and damage the new one. I did not see any spark, I just heard the noise... it's like when you power up a TV that's been off for a while.

Another thing: the new tube has one cable more than the old one... it has grey, blue and white wires.
It's like the ones going on the astig board in this picture, but I hace no astig board since it's an 8000.

Could this be a problem? Are the tubes compatible or do I have to modify something?

The Crackle is what you want hear!1 That is good! its the HV powering up the tubes. The grey and blue wire is like you said the , its for the Asig adjustment inthe focus coil. your other focus coils do not have this. and if you dont have an astig board then it doesn't matter just tie it up somewhere.
The C is the remote control light letting you know its receiving a signal.

Try powering it on again and press the # button to see if the grids come up on the blue.

Add myself to the thread as, after changing tubes, also my marquee 9500 Ultra became to arc; maybe there's something wrong in the air here in Italy...
Ok, I swapped tubes, made magnetics, convergence etc.... everything worked nice. So I decided to put covers on the PJ; fixed the HV splitter (according last tech bulletin raccomandations), insert the bottom cover (the PJ is on ceiling) and fired up: first i listen a subtle pffffff... and then some quite loudy sparks. Shut off the set, take down the bottom cover, power on and I see a little arc coming from splitter toward the inside of the tube. In the meantime the PJ worked normally, displaying the usual nice image, with no problem at all.
The tubes I installed had the old style HV leads, so I thought to change the HV leads with the others I had on the worn tubes, that were new style and looking as new.
Reinstalled everything but the problem remain unchanged. I swapped the HV splitter with another one, but no joy. Then I put some electric tape around each HV leads ends: the arc is somewhat reduced, but still I can hear a pffffff.... if any cable is near each HV leads... Actually the arc seems to go from the HV leads to anything surrounding them. If I take the splitter far from any other cable, there's no arcing...
I will try to clean any cable and cover... do you have any better idea? And which is the better way to clean cables and the inside of the PJ? Alcol?

Thanks

Carmine

Hi Carmine, thanks for your reply. I have the old style leads on the new tubes, but they look 100% new since they were not used before.
The advice here is to use silicone to seal the hv lead near the boot, see this image:

my new tubes are like the one on the right.

Do you guys think that this silicone would be ok?

http://it.farnell.com/dow-corning/2768003/rtv-silicone-3145-clear-90ml/dp/537007

(52USD... doh!)

this one is much cheaper http://it.farnell.com/dow-corning/1922181/rtv-silicone-744-white-310ml/dp/521838 but is rated for 17kV/mm, the more expensive one is 21kV/mm

What about using standard black RTV silicone, like this one:

http://it.farnell.com/dow-corning/4010056/rtv-silicone-732-black-90ml/dp/108899?crosssellid=108899&crosssell=true&in_merch=true&

24Kv/mm

Good alternative is Hylomar (100 series RVT-silicone)

http://www.hylomar.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=76&Itemid=88

It is rated 17Kv/mm and i have done all high voltage "things" with that stuff with no problems.

I'm applying silicone (thank you again, Carmine!) on the new tubes but I've found that the deflection jones are a little loose and I can turn them a little.
Is it a problem?

Happy 2011 to all of you Smile

I've removed all the boards, I want to clean them. Can I use denaturated alcohol?
I'd also like to clean the tubes, they've been wrapped in plastic for a long time and the front glass is dirty. What can I use to clean them?

Thank you Smile
