I purchased a home with a media center including a 100" diag 4 X 3 format screen, a RUNCO 933 HDTV Projection Monitor, and a Crystalimage VS 4.0 Video Scaler Controller. I built my own PC w/bluray and installed an HDFURY2 adapter to force the PC's NVIDIA card to "see" the monitor as a digital complient device. I am wondering if it would be practical to build a 16 X 9 format screen but I am concerned that the projector, with a native resolution of 1600 X 1200 (I am running the video resolution at 1024 X 768), will support anything other than a 4 X 3 format screen?

Comments please? Thanks.

What does the wear pattern on the tubes look like? If it is heavily worn you may want to set it up within the existing pattern.

sure it will, you will simply need to use the size controls to squeeze the picture down vertically. The thing I like about 16:9 screens is it puts the C-channel at a better height so you can hear what people are saying instead of having it shouting at your feet. Very Happy
Your PJ isn't 1600 x 1200 either, that's probably just the max rez it will lock onto. you will need to go with a different resolution like 1024 x 548 which is kinda wierd and not really a video resolution. I would suggest 1280 x 720 for down-scaled BD on a 16:9 (1.77:1) screen.

IMO the screen & display device's native aspect ratios should be the same. I guess it doesn't look as "cool" but I hate throwing away display area.

good point but shouldn't be an issue going from 4:3 to 16:9. Would be a big issue going the other way though

congratulations on the new home and projector! CRT projectors will run whatever you send them as long as it's within the limits the projector can handle. If you send it a 16x9 source and squeeze the vertical size down to the right proportions you'll be good to go. The only problem is you'll have a bunch of white space on the top/bottom of your screen, unless you shorten it or mask the area off somehow. That bothers some people. I prefer a 16x9 screen. HDTV content fits perfect (and 16x9 movies) and it's still big enough that movies will fit on it without modification, just a little space left on the top/bottom. You may find that when you project 16x9 on your current screen that it isn't wide enough for your liking. It really comes down to personal preference.

I've thought about making some masking pieces for watching movies but just never got around to it. I'd rather watch them. Smile

I forgot to mention that using my computer I'm feeding my barco 808s 1920x1080i @ 96hz using powerstrip and some settings that Ile posted here. It looks great and well within the bandwidth of the projector.

CRT projectors don't have native resolutions.
your Runco 933 is a rebadged Nec 6PG Xtra that can scan only up to 50Hz so it can't do 1600x1200 anyway.
Aspect ratio (16x9 and 4x3) have nothing to do with resolution. Pixels aren't necessarily square. You can do what you want.

I would run your projector at 1080i for everything and use a 16x9 ratio screen, about 7-8 feet wide or so. That's the best setup for this projector. You set up the projector to fit the screen.
