No 1. expand to cinema scope requires the crt to go further back
No 2. not have to mount it in the ceiling
No 3. Use a real 2.35.1 screen for a nicer feeling
No 4. cinema scope gets really tiny when the crt is in front of you
No 5. gets a really nasty burn in (in long times row)

To much coffee tonight perhaps or have you seen this before?

Regarding installing the CRT projector vertically & using a mirror:

I've seen it done before.

The biggest concern is to use a good mirror and make sure the projector doesn't overheat since they're not really meant to be installed that way. You need to look at how it's cooled very carefully.

The 2.35:1 vs other aspect ratio's has nothing to do with mounting a projector like this and bouncing off a mirror. There's lots of discussion around this here in other threads in the past.

There is also bit higher possibility that depris inside tube goes to gun and cause short than in vertical or tube faced down. That's why tubes should store faces down.

You can also screw projector bottom to wall, so it will be easier to assemble.

If you really have very little space it is not an idea that is out of the question.

You should use a "first surface mirror" where the metal coating is on the outside of the glass. This way the light from the projector does not have to go through the glass.

FSM's are used for good rear projection CRT projectors.

Done that, works fine, still doing it.

I used a normal everyday mirror (still do). People recommended to upgrade to a first-surface mirror to reduce ghosting.
Maybe I got lucky or maybe I'm just blind - but I've never noticed any problems.

Have fun!

I planned on doing this and spent a good amount of time building the contraption and mounting a large first surface mirror only to find that the image gets projector very high up the wall. You can't tilt the mirror more or less than 45 degrees since it prevents you from getting even focus. Run the numbers and take measurements before building so that you know it will work.
The best place to get a large high quality trapezoid shaped mirror is from a rear projection crt tv. They pop up broken on criagslist for free all the time.

Good luck!

What? in sweden we have two half-hour before we can go swiming Surprised

Ok anyway i also think the lenses can go "straight on" (in angle) that's good for uniform focus?

What about a curved mirror? That can generate a 4:3 phosphor to end up like 2:35.1..??
But i don't have any friends at Nasa

You can if your project has scheimpflig (lens flapping) or your willing to play with shims go find the correct spacing for good top/bottom focus.

That's been discussed and researched and won't work. Focus would be impossible.

Yeah, don't do a curved mirror. Just find an old broken rear projection CRT with a glass first surface mirror and use that. In the USA people throw old RP sets away or give them away often, in Sweden finding a free one might be harder though.

Obviously any mirror will work, so you can use anything, but you will get a cleaner image with a FS.

I have no idea how large a mirror you need, I've never done this Shocked

It might work. I think the size of the mirror will be determined by the distance of the mirror from the lenses.

My mirror is 19"x29" (rectangle) visible reflective area. Buy a little bigger if you intend on a border to mount it - or for trimwork. I've got mine mounted as close as you can get it (about 1/2" gap between lens and mirror).

If you'd like to space your mirror a little farther away, then I recommend building the cabinet, turn on the projector (image on the ceiling), and use a piece of cardboard where the mirror would be placed. Measure the illuminated area on the cardboard.

Wow, good idea Smile

FYI a rear projection mirror will be a trapezoid when you get it out of the cabinet. Rear projection DLP mirrors will obviously work too. Just thought I would mention because people sometimes forget that there are digital RP for scrap as well. Consumer grade DLP's do not have a long lifespan.

Hi all,

So I'm not alone Smile

I've done this :

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/1803/p1010008hr.jpg

Which PJ are you going to use ?

I use a stadart mirror, and it's good for the begining, but if you want perfect HD, you need a front surface mirror.
My mirror is 40x60cm and is a little too short (it's ok, but if I have to start again, I will redo it a little larger)

No idea how it will work with a curved screen and find a mirror that is correctly curved...

Consider also the cooling problem, my 808 is really noiser with 1080p in this position...
