Ok then its not contamination if it is on all three tubes. I would try a new HV splitter. Curt probably has lots for cheap.
While your at it look at the splitter closely, maybe under a magnifying glass for any cracks or pin holes where HV can leak out.
ok just noticed you have a spare 8500. swap out the splitter first. if its not that, then swap out the HVPS, everything on an 8500 and 9500 are the same except tubes and VNB's.

chances are you won't find the leak without powering up, that's the catch 22. Do it in a dark room and look carefully for the blu arc after checking everything nash suggested

I swapped out the HVPS and the popping sound is completely gone and no more bright flashes, it seems to run great!
Now more good news. When I took apart the "8500" I noticed a few odd things. First, the LVPS has Tim Martin's fan mod (the white foam and fans on the outside of the case). Second, although the label on the back says 8500 I swear that there are 9" tubes in this thing. Could this have been modded by Tim to a 9500? I bought it from someone in Florida a few years back and I do not know the history. Is there any way I could find out if Tim worked on this?
OK Curt - do you want to repair the other HVPS? I'd like to have a backup.

If the lenses look similar and it has Bellows then it could be an 8500LC. the LC denote Liquid Coupling.
the 9 and 8 inch Marquee LC units use the same lenses . Look at the tub face with the lenses off do they look the same size? the 8 inch would look much smaller.

OK it's been another year and I FINALLY hung this PJ up. It took me several months to find the time to replace the bellows and finsisht the decor in my theater room. Here's the current status/problem. PJ was totally cleaned up with isopropyl alcohol. The three bellows are replaced. I replaced the HVPS from the part unit that I have to address the popping sound. I hung the PJ last weekend (removed the lenses to deacrease the weight - what a difference). When I turned it on, everything seemed fine. The next day I turned it on again and the blue tube will not light up? What could this be? The tube worked when I first hung it, a day later it does not? As I said, I do have a parts machine so what do you suggest I start to swap?

Hello
Check your mini coax cables between the VIM and the neckboards. If blue lights up on test patterns then your signal cables are suspect.

Thanks Tim. Should I check the mini coax on all three tubes or just the blue? Am I checking to see if it is loose?
I cannot get the blue to light up on the test pattern and I have no source connected to the PJ. I did take out the second RGBHV card and replaced it with a Moome HDMI card. I doubt that could have done something but just saying.

Hello
The blue coax could be loose, or the connector could be tarnished, Confirm also that the G2 wire is in place, and that the high voltage power supply is correctly seated, as it is the G2 source. If nothing else solves it, try a voltmeter on the blue neckboard; you should have ~500 vdc at the tip of R76. A tube will not light up without G2. Try swapping neckboards. Try swapping red and blue coax lines coming off the VIM, you could have a dead VIM channel.

Tim - sorry it took so long to reply here. I went on vacation then we had serious power outages here in Connecticut with that freak storm on 10/29. Anyway, I went through the steps you describe above and ruled out the coax because I connected it to the red tube and it worked but the red coax line did not work on the blue tube. I checked the G2 and it was loose so I tightened it with nose pliers. Still did not work. I then started pulling all of the other wires off the neckboard to swap them as you suggested when I noticed another loose one. There are two flat black wires connected to the same side of the neckboard with a blue plastic spade cover. The one closest to the outside was loose. I tightened it, turned it on and YES I had a working blue tube. Your help was invaluable and I really appreciate it.
OF course I have another question. With the back panel folded up (my PJ is mounted upside down), I can hear the board that is normally right behind the blue tube (VDM I think) humming. It is quiet but it is definitely making a humming sound. Is it supposed to do this?

Yup, you're hearing the vertical deflection- that's normal.

Not sure why having them loose would cause the tube to shut down but there is a TSB that talks about that wire being loose causing noise in the projected image.

Draganm - you are exactly right. It was not those black wires because the tube went dark again after I put the covers pieces back on. I opened it and moved the neckboard around a little, turned it back on and it works. I must have something loose in the neckboard but it has been working now for over a week.
Now I have to get this thing setup. Have to start from scratch because I removed the tubes to replace the bellows...
