above...the poster said he just zoomed 16:9 to fit on his flat panel...unless I don't know the lingo...a flat panel is not a projector, it's a tv.

Damn, I was just trying to give someone an easy option to see if they liked cutting off the top and bottom of a 16x9 image on a 16x9 flat panel. It takes five seconds. Anyway, forget I said anything.

Let's stick with projectors here ok? Wink

To answer the question about the VGA - yes perhaps I should go with that option, from an HTPC I guess there's no real profit in running HDMI instead of VGA? That said, I'm one of those who doesn't believe that HDMI cables differ in image quality (seeing as all info are zeros and ones, they either get where they're supposed to or they don't - the ones and zeros don't get better/worse) - how about VGA though? And then I guess you mean VGA to 5xBNC directly? Or some kind of converter in between?

What's the advantage of the mentioned refresh rates of 47.952 or 71.928 Hz? And where do these numbers come from? Hours and hours of testing or are they based on some logics I am as of yet unaware of?

Cheers

longer runs need better quality cables, say from 5meter and up, below that it doesnt matter.
it is about signal loss when running long runs with a poor quality cable.
multiple of 23.97fps with which movies are shown and mastered on disc.
hdmi gives a better quality signal.

The disc DVD and Blu-Ray are authored at 24 Frames Per second 24FP. {Actually 23. something} So 48 is double rounded up and 72 is triple also rounded up. These almost perfect multiples are easiest for refreshing the picture and offer very little need for hard calculations therefore giving the smoothest picture.

Now someone will fill in the hard bits Laughing

saying hdmi will give better image quality is likely untrue...and/or the placebo effect. I can't imagine you'd be able to pick the difference from the two...it's a matter of where the better da converter is. Perhaps it's in the moome box or perhaps it's in the pc. Bottom line is the pc via vga will show custom resolutions and refresh rates with ease.

You get more losses in cable runs via an analog signal vs digital. With digital usually get no losses.

i have compared the 2 and looked closely on the screen, the noise is much less and the picture is more stable.
i cannot say how a professional vp looks with rgbhv out.
the rgbhv and hdmi are both 5 meter.

percentage, i have no idea.

Ok this is frustrating me.

I am now testing with a VGA - rgbhv cable from the HTPC to the PJ. Using powerstrip to play around with settings. But how on earth does one manage to set a refresh rate of 47.952Hz? I go to custom timings, try and enter value directly for vertical refresh but doesn't work. When I try decreasing the refresh with the arrow down it is constantly affecting the pj image, with the pj syncing in constantly. But I can only get as low as about 48,310 Hz, if I click down arrow again it suddenly pops back to 51,xxx Hz instead :S

I'm probably doing something awfully wrong so would appreciate some help. Ben do you have any of your custom resolutions available as files/text so I can copy/paste them straight into powerstrip?

just play with sync width (hor) try increasing that number to 60 or 70 and then alter refresh rate, backporch (hor) should be 250 minimal.
getting exactly 47.952 might not be possible via powerstrip.
uitvinken van real time adjustment could help

I just realize I have another problem when using the VGA cable - with that one the pj is recognized as "generic plug and play monitor", and max resolution is 1600x1200. Meaning I cannot even go 1920x800 or 1920x1080 for testing purposes :S

dvh I just realize your dutch as well Smile

Will try!

PowerStrip timing parameters:
1280x540=1280,38,58,252,540,3,10,9,43875,512

Generic timing details for 1280x540:
HFP=38 HSW=58 HBP=252 kHz=27 VFP=3 VSW=10 VBP=9 Hz=48

VESA detailed timing:
PClk=43,88 H.Active=1280 H.Blank=348 H.Offset=22 HSW=58 V.Active=540 V.Blank=22 V.Offset=3 VSW=10

Linux modeline parameters:
"1280x540" 43,875 1280 1318 1376 1628 540 543 553 562 +hsync +vsync

That's what I got now - giving me a 47.954 Hz refresh. Close enough? Smile

Can't say I understand much of it tbh though. And with the VGA cable apparently I cannot go above 1600x1200 at the moment...

I'm struggling getting the settings even close to ok for 1920x800, but at least for 1280x540 it seems to work.

Or well.... powerstrip says the frequency is 47,954Hz, but when I check with info on the PJ it says 44,41Hz Confused

Also the image is slightly distorted towards the top corners of the windows desktop...

This is absolutely correct.

The only time you can make a blanket statement that HDMI will look better than analog is when the display device is digital and it therefore eliminates the DA conversion alltogether.

This is also assuming that your RGB(HV) cables and terminations are 75 ohms. Some cheapies are not!

This is 1280x534 and with 47.954Hz according to Powerstrip:

What's with the artifacts in the top and how do I get rid of them Sad

Cannot get anything higher than 1600x1200 with the VGA lead still, it is set up as "generic non-plug and play monitor".

Perhaps though it's just as well to simply go with 1280x534 (or thereabouts), I reckon the difference between that and 1920x800 isn't that clear with my skills at setting up alignment and convergence anyway. Plus it will be less of a strain on the pj?

Cheers
