Let me put it this way, there are many CRT'rs here who are cheap ass bastards , no refference to anyone specific guys who would not spend more on parts that cost more then the PJ. then there are others that treat them like an old classic car, sure it wont be worth a lot but they love it so much they'll spend more than the next guy just to get it running and enjoy it while not feeling guilty at all about it.
My processors cost more than both PJ in my set up, others would have never done it. Why did I? because I love the challenge of the blend set up and just Love CRT in general.
It is all about personal preference, and priorities.

Yeah, I'm not really worried about money I put into it over time, I'm worried about the quality and enjoyment I'll get from it. It's mostly just the money I have to put in right up front. I'm sure eventually I'll get a crazy high end processor, but it's little steps for now.

Probably a green tube too assuming it doesn't have a big MARANTZ logo burn in the blue as well. (haven't seen the machine but this is all typical)
there's no such thing as a "minty" all original CRT projector unless someone has done some work to restore it. I just re-furbed an Accurate 9 that was used only in the 2002 CEDIA Las Vegas. Stored away carefully for 8 years and then made a big mess when it was hung from the ceiling. dumped Glycol all over the floor.
CRT PJ's are like cars, they need maintenance even if you don't drive them. |
I don't know. I picked up an 8500 a year ago for $250 and it had minty tubes in it. It was totally stock, so it needed the "Marquee Maintenance thread" to it, but it did not need tubes. Granted, that was an 8"er, but they are out there. If your not looking to be patient or want to mod and tinker, than you should have a chat with Curt and get yourself a turn-key pj. Your probably not going to get 1080p72Hz out of the gate, but something to work to over time since you have a limited budget.

Well as I've discussed with you in PM's and stuff I'm not in a rush, and I love to tinker. I build speakers, amps, DAC's, and other electronics. I do wood working and stuff as well so I'm a very hand on person that loves to mess with things.
So what are your guys thoughts on processors? Is the DVDO series the best to go with under 1k? I've seen a few DVDO iScan VP30's for 400-500? And a VP20 for like 300. The DUO from Curt is of course 999.
If I got something like the VP30 that has BNC outputs would I need something like the HDFury if going from something like a popcorn hour or an HTPC that doesn't have HDCP?

After all is said and done, you now have to ask yourself how much content is truly in 2.35 vs. 1.78, especially on Blu-ray.

Yeah I was going to say probably 95% of the stuff I watch is 2.35:1. Seems very little is filmed in 1.78:1 now days, usually animation stuff.

Don't get anything below a DVDO VP50 from DVDO. VP30 and below are not optimized for HD processing
I'd suggest to start with something like a Lumagen HDP or VisionPro HDP

Is the DVDO iScan DUO lower then the VP50?

Yes, the Vision series(HDP/HDQ) are the predecessors of the Radiance Units. However for 250-500 going
used market price (if you can find one) is much more appealing . Remember these units were from 1400-2500
when bran new. I just convinced a local 9500LC to switch from his HD Leeza. I found one for 420 bucks
installed it did his greyscale calibration using the 11 point gamma and greyscale and he is ecstatic.
He works in the film and commercial industry and is a stickler for proper colors and especially blacks/Grey.
he said right away before i even started the calibration how much better the image looked over the Leeza.
Now I have the radiance and it too is a big step up from the Vision series but at 2500 starting price it is expensive.
Those units on ebay are a great buy. And the radiance gives you the ability to use Spectracals Calman v4
to do fully automated calibration.
But for your budget id find an inexpensive CRT and hopefully there is enough for a scaler that has some
type of 11 point greyscale and gamma adjustment.

Well if I can get an 8" for ~1k that would leave 1k+ for a scaler. That's why I was asking about the Radiance XS as it's ~1200 shipped.

But, with the radiance you have to find a PJ that has HDMI input or a card to do that, add more money aside for that.
With the Vision series the money you save can get you a Moome card or external HDMI input or an HD Fury. otherwise you can not use 1080@24 as an input to the Video Processor. HDCp will default the picture to 1080i. Also the Vision series will out put RGBHV, the Radiance does not.
