I used Media Portal in the past, XBMC is much better. Also it doesn't take a lot of processing power if you use hardware acceleration like I am. But either way I'm planning on leaving the HTPC behind as it seems to always need some tweaking lol. If I go CRT I don't need 2 things to tweak all the time Smile But a scaler could be possible. I don't think there are many people very close to me with CRT setups, so going to see any is going to be unlikely.

Well where are you? CRT'ers are in some unlikely spots. Let us know where you are maybe someone is close by.

I'm about 10 miles from Youngstown Ohio, or about an hour from Cleveland. Umm an hour and a half from Pittsburgh? If anyones in Pittsburgh or Cleveland I can definitely make it there just have to figure out a good time.

There I added my location to my profile.

Ok put that in your member info. There are at least 3 guys near you I think, I won't name them but if you start a thread about wanting to see a CRT I'm sure they would be happy to show of the set-ups.

Damn your edit beat me.

funny, the guy comes to the biggest CRT site in the world and gets told to buy a bulb burner. I always wonder why some of the people here are even here at all?
Surprised

Yeah I was starting to wonder as well Smile

This is why I'd really like to keep budget to around 2k to add things like HDMI boards, scalers if I need although my source is HD and I really only watch one source.

Because this question gets asked from time to time before any research is done. Once the person asking finds out how much it is going to cost, that person gets discouraged. A better question to ask is what is the best CRT set up that I can get for my budget. One can then compare that to whatever the latest digital is and make an informed decision.

Well, I've researched CRT's a bit in the past and have always had a sweet spot for them. All I was trying to see if it was at all possible to get what I want within my budget. After talking to several people through PM's and what not I think it may be possible.

Another reason I think a 9" may be better is because I'm going to be projecting onto a Seymour AV audio transparent screen.

Transparent screen shouldn't matter on tube size. But screen size does.

Well I figured you'll lose some of the brightness, so the 9" sets are brighter and may make up for it a bit.

screen size plays a big role on brightness as well. Bigger the screen, the less bright. How big is the screen? I would say go no bigger than 110", but it also depends on the room lighting too.

If you have found someone willing to sell you a 9" with a VP for under $2k, then I know the bottom has fallen out of CRTs.

Well...possibly a 9" for 1k? I imagine there are plenty of VP's that I can get for 1k. Although that 1k dollar 9" is going to require some upgrades amongst other things?

A 9" set for a grand is going to require a lot more than upgrades - it's probably going to need new tubes. Unless it's an atypical sale (seller doesn't know what he has) a 9" set is going to be at least $2500, and at that price, it's probably going to need a tube or two.

A grand is more like what you're going to pay for a nice, minty G70, NEC XG, or Cine 8/Zenith 1200, give or take depending on seller, condition, shipping, location, etc.

I think a little more accurately would be, there's no way you're going to find a 9" crt from a COMMERCIAL or PROFESSIONAL reseller for $2500.

Many of the people who frequent here, and have 9" sets, picked them up for under $1000.

Just look at the recent Madrigal thread, there are plenty out there for cheap, you just gotta look, and be a bit patient.

I think it would be foolish to assume that Madrigal in scottsdale for $750. is anythign more than a project. At the very LEAST it will need new bellows and coolant. Probably a green tube too assuming it doesn't have a big MARANTZ logo burn in the blue as well. (haven't seen the machine but this is all typical)
there's no such thing as a "minty" all original CRT projector unless someone has done some work to restore it. I just re-furbed an Accurate 9 that was used only in the 2002 CEDIA Las Vegas. Stored away carefully for 8 years and then made a big mess when it was hung from the ceiling. dumped Glycol all over the floor.
CRT PJ's are like cars, they need maintenance even if you don't drive them.

I understand that, and I have at least 6 months of looking and waiting. I don't mind doing some work on them, heck even a retube if the price is right wouldn't be that horrible.

Even so an 8" is still a possibility. Especially since I may be able to grab an 8" LC for below my budget depending.

New tubes from VDC are about 1100 each for 9 inch tubes. You'd be lucky to find a better deal like the NEC thread for new tubes from the guy in australia.

Well I'm not sure I'd go for new tubes, but some good used tubes.

There is a VPH-1292Q locally for ~1200 guy says there's 3k hours on the tubes.

So it's possible to get into a 9" set for my budget, will it be perfect of course not. Not sure there is such a thing in the CRT world.
