I'm wondering what "2009 is available" means - how can they know ahead of time what roads will be built?

Well those were my words, not Amazon's or Garmin's. But it does show how they try to control the lemmings. Just look above at my gushing praise of Amazon for moving stock out so fast that they always have the latest map databases; then my surprise at finding out that 4 or so months before I received my unit they (Garmin) were already providing free updates to the "2009" version!
But only for 60 days after registration. Took me 30 days to register; unfortunately when I did somehow their data showed that my unit had acquired satellite in January 2008 (did I get an unadvertized refurb/return in that new in box?).
The 2009 label is clearly so that people like me, buying in 2008, don't get upset when we see our units have 2008 map data in them. (That is until we find out the data was current as of February 2007 and updating to the real current version release in March 08 will cost us $70.)

I have been looking to get a GPS too. They seem to be very expensive for a electronic device. There is no way I'm going to pay $400.00 to $500.00 or more, I will be looking in the $100.00 range. I just can not see myself using one that often to justify the higher cost. I'm betting that there will be plenty of cheap ones around Christmas time.
Plus, I can not see spending that much money on something that will be stolen out of my car, dropped or just plain fail in six months time.
You know with technology advancing so fast they should make these things so you can throw them away after a year, just like they do with the digital PJ's
Deron.

Look here... that forum is for politics...
I second the Garmin... I bought the wife a Nuvi and it works great... She loves it.. I have had a couple buddies have problems with tom tom's.
But Garmin is local to the KC area... So I am a little biased...

Well I am back to liking Garmin and thanks to Chip for starting this OT thread and saving me $70.
Garmin came through and allowed me to update to the lateset (yes - 2009) map data for free!
