Hey, I'm not saying I loved it, I'm just saying it was the best option. At least it left some time to see something else, which is more than I can say for 'Watchmen'.
Still, if you want to get your money's worth, the director's cut is on the disc, and it's two and a half minutes. Now, granted, a lot of people said that the film was 15 seconds too long to begin with, but you'd be surprised how much the extra minute and a half fleshes out the backstory. I grant you, Empty Case was sh*t in Cardboard Box, but the director's cut gives you a chance to see what he really did with the character. Case might not be best actor material, but in this movie I really think he was short-changed by the script.
Plus, the extras are really thorough. It's not very often that the 'making of' featurette actually shows the entire shoot.

I can see why the studios would want to supply inferior quality versions. I know of several people (in my physical world) that rent with the sole intention of ripping the content and returning the disk immediately. They did this with Blockbuster, then Netflix when they came along, and most recently Redbox.
If one is going to presume someone is going to rent-to-rip then why not provide a lower quality copy? Also, is there anything in the rental business (regardless of specific company) that states they will provide copies of movies that are identical in those for purchase?

A) It's expensive to re-encode, re-author, re-QA, control separate versions, etc.
B) The number of people who rip/save is small compared to the overall market.
C) Why? Where's the loss? So, they rented and ripped? How does that affect the bottom line? Does anybody really re-rent the same titles over and over? If so, how many?

Point taken. There's something to be said for a story treatment that just gets to the point. I can see that.

Alright, alright - I'll block out some time and check out the director's cut - sounds pretty good. Cardboard Box did suck, but not as much as Damned Vinyl Sleeve - THAT SUCKED. Low-budget, and horribly executed, and of course anchored by Empty Case's pathetic performance.

I don't usually watch the extras... I'm usually too tired after I watch the feature... This is one I might make it through.
I heard there were a couple of cool trailers on the disc too, but that you have to use the pause button to see them.
