I have a pair of 701's that I never have thought sounded "right". I know, I know . . . surprise, surpirse right? Anyway, I've kept them for about 8 years and I have since replaced them with some Energy speakers and a nice sub. The cabinets look really cool though. I tore them apart last night and the configurations on top has 2 paper tweeter (one facing front and on towed in at a 45 degree angle) with a paper midrange firing to the side. I thought I might replace them with something a little better and end up with a decent pair of towers. The 2 - 8" internal speaker put out decent bass.

So, what component tweeters would you recommend? Is there any reason the midrange fires 90 degrees to the side from front? Is midrange non directional? The speakers have 3 wires going to them and I'm used to 2. One on one pole and 2 on the other. Any idea why? There looks to be a capacitor of some kind on the midrange. WTF?

I'd sell them on ebay for $150 but the cabinets look awesome and i think it would be a fun project. The first 701s were cool looking speakers. I'll post pics of the inside tongiht.

Any ideas?

Check to make sure the foam surrounds are OK before you go further. Those usually disintegrate after 20 years, and you'd be into the woofs for $40 each to refoam them.

The tweets and mids are really a personal choice. I'd guess your mids are probably OK, you want more highs, right?

Cone tweets never really went super high in the frequency range, but at the time that's all there was, esp in the lower end speakers. I'd give Parts Express some business. Chances are you might not need a crossover, but that depends on the frequency range of the new speakers. Get some dome tweeters for say $15 each and see how it goes. I might have the crossover schematic here...

I would but I can't figure out how in the hell to get to them.

I know what 701s look like, but have never worked on them. Either the grilles come off, or you go in through the back.

Yeah, like that was helpful! Smile

I think the grilles might be tacked on with nails?

Answers to questions. . .

1. Yes, that is dust in the ports.

2. No, those aren't cob webs. The upper compartment was stuffed with foam.

3. White streaks on grill are from a white crayon in the hands of a 3 year old. Any ideas?

Damndest cabinet design I've ever seen. there are 2 8 inch drivers facing each other wired out of polarity to do a push-pull thing. I just can't see HTF you could ever get to them to replace them.
