I picked up a couple fairly low-time Runco 991s (these are the XG852 models) a couple days ago, one of which had what sounded like the system board "scrambled mess" problem. Calling the menu would usually do nothing, but once in a while I would get a bunch of unsynched horizontal lines, and usually the blue tube would be the only one to come on, or I would get an occasional shutdown with Fd error codes. I assumed the system board was toast. Waveforms on the testpoints were scary bizarre compared with a good board.

I did the memory cap discharge to 0v and charge back to 5v with no improvement.

But then I tried uploading a known-good *.GRD file (from another 852) to the eeprom using the PC control software, which fixed everything.

Was this the dreaded "scrambled mess" or something else that is widely known about? I really never saw anything about this in the archives, but maybe I was searching for information on the wrong problem. The menus(when I could get anything at all) sure sounded like the description, though.

And I made sure to download all of my system eeproms to the computer, just in case. The only downside is that the actual projector hours (1350) have been overwritten by the 4000 hours from the projector that supplied the good system file.

Anyway, I'm much happier now Very Happy

Look for Curt tech warning on the XG,s. it is a new problem he discovered with the v-boards where they loose deflection and heat up the base of the tube bell and CRACK!!!! there goes a tube.

I've had an XG-852 for many years and have been following Curt's recent information. It's almost to the point that I watch movies with my finger poised on the remote OFF button, waiting for the dreaded mystery glow.

I've been looking at the schematics trying to figure out why or how the vertical swing detect circuits on each color is not detecting this. Or maybe it is catching it, but the shutdown threshold isn't right. Or something.

My XG1352 has a scrambled Input Select menu and only shows a image for a blink every ten seconds. This is the first problem this projector has had. Before last night this 3000 hour projector was perfect.

Can you tell me how to identify the memory cap to try the "discharge to 0v and charge back to 5v" fix?

Where might I be able to get the software and file to "uploading a known-good *.GRD file to the eeprom using the PC control software"?

Thanks.

David

I'm not sure that new software will cure this, but it's something I should try when I get back to Vancouver in a week. I do have replacement system boards that work,

These boards die from one day to the next, there's no predicting the failure.

Case, it went out while showing 1080i Y/Pb/Pr. I've tried 1080i RGBHV and 480i S-video. The S-video showed a picture with bad registration for a few minutes. That is how I was able to learn the Input Select menu was scrambled. The number order is backwards. Instead of 01-99 it is 99-01. The right columns have no letters only odd patterns in character like blocks. I tried to adjust static registration, but it did not change.

Curt, let me know when you are back in Vancouver and what you recommend once at home base.

You need to clear the lot and start again and see if thatll fix it. If not, youll have to upload the system board file again id say.
