I intend to buy a JVC-RS25.
My projection screen is a DRAPER Targa AT1200 acoustically transparent (16:9 - 203 x 114cm - 92" diagonal)
Few time ago I read in a magazine (a French magazine but do not remenber which one) that using a based LCD projector with a screen like the one I have could result in a "moiré-effect" caused by the pixels and the mini-holes in the screen not matching well together !!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anybody know about that possible problem ?
Also would it be a good idea to contact JVC and/or Draper ?
I do not have the opportunity to borrow a projector to do the test, so I will rely on your answer.

Question Sad

Any fixed pixel (digital) projector runs the risk. I would think for something like the D-ILA panels (LCoS), you would be asking this on AVS more than anywhere else. At least there is a healthy group over there with JVC D-ILA projectors, including some using AT screens.

Unfortunately, it will be rather hard to find someone using the exact screen and projector. Have you discussed this potential problem with whatever JVC dealer you are considering getting the projector from? Inquire of returns?

It's not just the screen and projector, but also how LARGE a screen you use and the resolution of the projector (# of pixels). The Moire effect happens when the pixels line up with the perforations on the screen in a certain way and you can get rid of it by making the image slightly smaller or larger.

I managed to get in touch over the phone with JVC Technical Service here in Belgium.
They say that their panel are not LCD and if I did not have problem with a CRT projector, neither should I have problem with theis D-ILA.

Did they mount your screen fabric diagonally, so the perforations don't line up with the pixels?

To assume only LCD projectors can be susceptible to moire is a wrong assumption.

True, D-Ila is not LCD. LCD is an acronym for Liquid Crystal Display. D-Ila is a trademark name for JVC's LCoS, or Liquid Crystal on Silicon. LCoS is also used by other companies like Sony, who trademarks their LC on Silicon as SXRD. Both JVC and Sony are now OEM sources for LCoS panels for other companies like Anthem and LG.

If you have not already bought the JVC RS25, you may want to see if you can get one as B-stock, or old stock. I am sure JVC will have new models announced next month at CEDIA, if not at IFA.
