For less than $20 more you can have a quad core, sounds worth the price to me, but yeah, you can save some money with a 3 core if you'd like. so many options out there!

I just want to make it faster. That means a quad core is in order

I highly recommend the amd quadcores. Very inexpensive and mine has been running flawless using a gigabyte motherboard and win7 32bit. The processor was $99 for a quadcore and the mobo was $75-ish. great combination though. You'll see small performance gains from intel, but easily 2-3 times the expense.

I thought the triple core was the sweet spot. I am running an Athlon II x3 that is pretty fast. I think if I upgraded it would be to the Phenom x3. Unless you are doing something that needs four cores or more and the software can take advantage of it, then I think the better price/performance is x3.

This is for my green machine Bluray/HD-DVD/DVD/PVR box HTPC. I wanna recycle the dual core over to my old HTPC box.

According to Newegg, the prices are:
Phenom II X3 $88 3g black
Phenom II X4 $135 3g
" $152 3.2g black
" $165 3.4 black

If you compare the prices of Athlon x4 to Phenom x3 and performance, then it gets a little more complicated. For video encoding, the quad wins, but for most everything else the Phenom wins.

Athlon II X4 = $89

Sorry, I haven't looked at the differences between the Phenom II X3 and the Ahtlon II X4. Maybe you're right. I can say that if you're wanting to play bluray all of these are overkill. Even with DXVA turned off my cpu stays under 50%. Any of these options would work, just depends on what you want to spend really.
