I am in need of a Toshiba picture tube for a vintage Commodore 1702 monitor. I also need the yoke and magnetics. Anyone got a dead monitor with a good tube?

I might. Is this the one with the separate RCA connectors for y/c for the Amiga?

If so, you won't need the parts - the monitor itself is very nice. I'll make you a deal!

Ahh, the memories.

I still have a 1701 tucked away in the back of my furnace room.

I googled but couldn't find any information on what's different between the 1701 and 1702. Every site I found simply called them "nearly identical". Anyone know?

EDIT: Found it!

"The difference between a 1701 and a 1702 is that the 1701 was supplied with a 5 pin DIN video cable and the 1702 with a 8 pin DIN video cable."

Funny, I still have 2 or 3 disk containers full of 5-1/4" C-64 floppies that I don't want to give up.

"You'll pry them from my cold dead hands!" I tell my wife.

(The ironic part is that I bet most of them don't work anymore... but don't tell her that) Wink

Do you still have your C64?

Yup. Of course! And my MSD super disk drive too. The standard 1541 drive was problematic (would get out of alignment easily) so I bought an MSD drive way back when.

I have an old commodore monitor not sure what it is. The model number is not in the front like the one above. It is gray with a plastic screen over the glass screen. I can't pull it out w/o waking up the wifey, to read the model number. I have tons of extra C64 stuff including working systems and 18 shoe boxes full of working floppies. Before you ask-YES, I use it.

Excellent! I don't want you to part out a working monitor. I'm looking for someone that has a non functional monitor with a good tube.

What do you use the C64 for most?

I use it primarily just for the old games. I also have a complete set of Boise State Bronco Football Stats 1932-2009 on it. This is just for ease of access when an argument arises during a game. I already had 1932-1987 stored on disk.

I'm tripping over one in the basement, in working order last time I used it. I found a cable at the "Buck Or Two" store (SVHS to RCAs) that works with the chroma/luma inputs. The curvy tube and huge dot pitch is a bit disappointing, though. And I think there's a splotch of discolouration on the tube, though not objectionable.

Anyone on Vancouver Island willing to adopt a Commie monitor, send me a private message or something.

AnalogRocks> I have a 1702 display that I bought recently for $25. I am having issues with the display as described here:

I am in the GTA area. Are you able to repair/adjust my 1702? How much would you charge?

Thank you

What exactly are you seeing? It does look like a difference in picture tubes. I bet if you open both monitors up you will see two different model tubes.

It could be as the guys on the other form say. Different shadow mask or dot pitch.

As for the "vertical flow" that could be a ground loop. Try plugging the monitor into the same outlet as the computer.

If you get a chance post some full screen pictures here too.

BTW never did find a tube for mine Laughing

I tried plugging the monitor into the same outlet as the computer as well as a different outlet however there was no improvement in picture quality.

I connected the C64 to a 1802 display with true chroma and luma. Attached is the result.

Next, attached is the 1702 (which has the issue) connected to the same C64 with true chroma and luma.

I then tried using just luma on the 1702 and the picture quality is much better (though it is only black and white). See attached.

Finally I tried another C64 which only has composite and luma outputs. I connected it to the 1702 using composite as chroma and there is some improvement but not close in quality to the 1802. See attached.

If I can bring you a dead 1702 display would you be able to fix mine for free?

Are the bars in the pictures scrolling upwards?

As for fixing it. Maybe. It could also be used, used, used. The tubes in these monitors are ES focused, (Electrostatically Focused). The beam is focused through an aperture ( hole ) and, as the electrons fly through the apeture they erode the surrounding material. Lessening the beam focus as the tube ages. Giving you a softer picture.

Now, that being said. This wouldn't account for the bars in the pictures unless those are just a by product of your camera? That could be electrical maybe a ground on the jack, bad solder joint. Capacitors may be dried out too causing electrical gremlins.

You can tweak the focus on the flyback (High Voltage transformer) but it may already be tweaked. You can also try the astig rings on the tube (watch out for the 400-600volts there )to see if you can get a smaller dot size. Keeping in mind they tended to do that at the factory and then glued the rings in place. There could come a point of diminishing returns.

The bad focus could all be a by product of age.

What end of T.O. are you in BTW?
