After a brief search I've reduced my list to the following.

Oppo 83 $499
Marantz BD7004 $399
Denon DBP2010CI $299

I'm leaning Denon as it is basically the same machine as the Marantz at $100 less.

I'm not big on a gazzilion features I just want excellent PQ, very good DVD up-scaling, very good audio, and 7.1 analog audio!

Anyone have or audition any of these players? Anything out there comparable audio/video wise?

If you are looking for great video and audio quality why not look at the Oppo 80?

Oppo 83 Is what I have. Really nice build quality and great pic and 7.1 analog outs which sound really good.

That might be choice #4 The Oppo 80 is in the mix ($289).

The above three seem to place slightly higher in my seaches. Marantz in PQ and analog audio, Denon in analog audio.

Sources? Or have you seen them all?

I haven't seen any of them but I am pretty much set on the Oppo 80.

If I had to do it again it would be the Oppo 83 for me also. Thing has got excellent reviews and is built nicely.

I got a BDP-05FD Pioneer Elite a year ago. Mainly because its Wolfson DA's and 2ch audio sound quality 8) and being nearly half the price I would have paid for the Oppo.

Can someone offer what the 83 is providing over the 80 in the context of the OP's requirements?

this is for the BDP-83

" * VRS™ by Anchor Bay - The BDP-83 incorporates Anchor Bay's award-winning Video Reference Series (VRS) technology, and delivers a picture that is cleaner, smoother, true-to-life and free of artifacts.
* Full HD 1080p Output - The BDP-83 features user selectable video output resolutions, including 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and up to 1080p 50 or 60Hz.
* True 24p™ Video - Many Blu-ray Discs are recorded at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate as the original movie's theatrical release. The BDP-83 can faithfully redeliver the original frames using 1080p 24Hz output (compatible display required) for smoother motion and a flicker-free, film-like home theater experience. It can also restore the original 24 frames per second progressive-scan video from well-authored DVDs and output as 1080p 24Hz.
* Source Direct Mode - For users who wish to use an external video processor, high-end audio/video receiver or display, the BDP-83 offers a "Source Direct" mode. The original audio/video content on the discs is sent out with no additional processing or alteration.
* Multiple Zoom Modes - The BDP-83 supports multiple levels of aspect ratio control and image zooming, including a vertical stretch mode for customers with a 2.35:1 CIH (Constant Image Height) display system.
* HDMI - HDMI is an all digital interface for the cleanest possible connection. It delivers high-quality digital video and audio through a single cable. The BDP-83 features an HDMI v1.3 output with 30-bit and 36-bit Deep Color support."

BDP-80 does not have the VRS so if a scaler is not in the system this will offer what he wants. If the OP wants better 2ch audio quality the the 83SE would be where it is at (Not to turn this into and audiofool discussion".

In the context of the OP's requirements? I would say since the OP specifically mentioned "very good DVD upscaling", then like James said, the BDP-83 with the Anchor Bay scaling would probably be necessary. Otherwise, any old BD player (including the BDP-80) would do just fine if all you want to do is watch BD at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

Oh, the other things the 80 is missing, which may- or may not be a problem for some people: metal faceplate, RS-232, wired IR input, backlit remote, dedicated 2-ch RCA-out for separate "CD" input (which you could assign different surround processing - or no processing - to independent of other inputs).

Personally, the 80 is probably adequate... I rarely ever watch DVD anymore... I would like the wired IR input - might be nice to not have anther IR dongle stuck to the front of the machine. But, then once I'm at that price point, then some of these other players start looking pretty attractive.

Thanks, SC, not really interested (well, at least not as much as the wife would be if she could say, "video scaling of DVD's"). I seem to be flirting with a new need for a new BD player. While 7.1 analog would be nice, I would think I find it more useful [to me] if the player allowed the sub-titles to be moved for those working in scope setups.

I know someone said the Oppo can do this, but it wasn't clear {and I have not yet investigated] if all of them do or not. But, I thought I would add this feature to the OP list if he might have not considered it before. Smile

The Oppo's can do it...all of them. I am not aware of others that can but I haven't researched much past Oppo.

You are right about the subtitle movement feature. I am not sure whether customers actually asked for it, but Oppo added it along with a few other things, in a recent firmware update. This is another reason why I have always been impressed with this company and would continue to buy their products. As good as their existing players are, they are always looking at ways to make them even better.

For those of you that wish to support this forum when purchasing (it costs you nothing extra), I've added links to the first post like this:

Oppo 83 $499
Marantz BD7004 $399
Denon DBP2010CI $299

(You can hover over the links for the prices to confirm).

We thank you!

My 2 cents: The Oppo 83 is the one to get. Not only for the faster load times but also as Ron mentioned, Oppo is one company that doesn't sit still. You can buy their players and rest assured that if some new 'feature' comes that can be done with a firmware upgrade, they're the one company to do it (as is Sony with the PS3). Other companies seem more interested in just getting you to buy a new player. That doesn't sit right with me.

Kal

My intent is to replace my HTPC as my primary video source. I still have a ton of DVDs so I want video scaling that is comparable to a good HTPC.

No doubt the Oppo 83 is a fine machine but is it $200 better?

I would say Yes. Owning 2 DVDO products over the years and A/B testing my VP50 (has the VRS chip) against my player (BDP-05FD Pioneer Elite)

Sounds to me as though you have made up your mind and are looking to be convinced otherwise, no? Could be wrong but it kinda sounds that way to me sorry if it is the latter.

Either choice is better then nothing my friend and if the 200 is raising your eyebrow wondering if you will get your money worth get the 80 and do not look back.

James

LOL, I feel the pain. What was your first choice? I'd say go with your gut.

To try and put you at ease, the 83 is an outstanding player for the money.
