So, I just rebuilt my htpc with a clean copy of win7. Upon getting everything installed, I've found that Win7 is flat out f*cking REFUSING to believe that an analog display can do over 1600x1200. Ignoring hidden modes fails - to the extent where changing the mode results in, "You do not have administrative privileges to make this change" followed immediately by "mode invalid". Powerstrip won't override it either.
I had a win7 install before, running 1080i60... so what gives? It won't let me change the monitor type, won't let me override available modes... it's basically just giving me a big f*cking middle finger. What the hell is going on here?!

That's strange. Have you tried writing a custom driver for the display? What is the video card?

Are you just hooking it up to your projector?
Doesn't moninfo making custom drivers?

There is a setting for displaying "non-supported" or "non-standard" resolutions. I just can't recall were. That needs to be set.
I'm not familiar with WIN7 though.
Does Win7 handle custom EDID files. I set one up for the PJ at 2000x1600. I'm not sure if the OS is loading it though.

I've found that setting, and it gets ignored, unlike before, for some reason.
Drivers are up to date.
I haven't tried making a new EDID since I'm not sure how to go about it yet... I found one that someone made via a search here, so I'll give that a shot first.

I used davemon as above.
That did the trick - I can run different resolutions now. So I was following Mark's thread advice about getting interlaced modes working on an nv card, and that was great, except the default timing has a far too large vertical size. So I decided to use his timings.
And it says my monitor won't support them. The ones with tiny vertical porches work fine. big vertical porch to make it actually work at the right size? NOT f*cking SUPPORTED.

I'll give it a shot. I'd like to run 1080i72 though.
I've considered hooking the PJ up to the ATI card (in the same computer!), getting the timings right, and transferring them to the nV card. Maybe even use port3 for the ATI and port5 for the nV so I can live switch between them... but if the nV card randomly rejects certain timings that'll be hard.

Whenever I had a resolution problem, I'd just use the driver for the Sony GDM-FW900 24" widescreen CRT monitor.
It's an XP driver, but it might not hurt to try it in Win7?

Eddie is right.
You need a custom monitor driver, the Sony one will work.
If you need a W7 one, use Powerstrip to create one with the settings you want.
I wasted an hour battling this on my W7 build too...

Didn't read the rest of the thread, but I assume you've figured out whether you have admin rights for the account you logged into the machine with?
