The FTP program I was using won't won't work with my new computer that has Windows 7. My FTP needs are very basic. My FTP knowledge is very limited. I need a free and SIMPLE (for retards) program. You guys have any suggestions?

No need for one, open "Computer" in the address bar type ftp://yoursite.com it should prompt you for a username & password. Then you should be able to browse files and folders. Copy and paste or drag and drop files from your computer.

Yeah, any browser will handle ftp://site.com. That works OK if you only need to download.

In Windows, you can just open a command prompt and run "ftp site.com", but then you have to know a few commands to make it go.

There's the free FileZilla FTP client, which works great for e.g. running multiple uploads/downloads at once to increase bandwidth, but that might be more complicated than you want. It's fairly simple, but not as simple as typing ftp://site.com into a browser.

Who is your website host? Most seem to offer free webFTP interfaces that are really easy to use and no software download required.

What software were you using before on what OS that won't work on W7??

A login screen pops up on both ftp://yoursite.com and ftp://site.com. I can't figure out how to use these sites. (Retarded--remember?) Very Happy

I checked out my website's ftp function. It's simple but pretty slow to use.

I saw filezilla yesterday. I started to download it, but I thought I'd check with you guys first. I'll give it a try. Thumbs Up

No, Phil, "yoursite.com" and "site.com" were just examples. Smile So if you want to download something from, say, Apple's FTP site (I don't know if they even have one!), you might use "ftp://ftp.apple.com".

When you want to FTP something, you'll need the hostname of the FTP server (ftp.apple.com or whatever) and the path within that site. So if somebody tells you "FTP this file from www.whatsis.com -- it's in the /pub/stuff/yadda directory," then you'd enter "ftp://www.whatsis.com/pub/stuff/yadda" into your browser. Or just enter "ftp://www.whatsis.com" and then click on pub, click on stuff, click on yadda.

It might prompt you for a login and password. If so, then whoever told you to use that site will have to tell you what they are. Often FTP sites are set up for "anonymous" access, meaning you don't need a password. But you might still need to enter a login name. "anonymous" or sometimes "ftp" should work for that, and any string will work for a password.

Duh! Embarassed That they were working links added to my confusion.

Not a nice trick to pull on a retard. Mad Mr. Green

dallas-music.com is the site I need ftp access to, which I know how to do with ftp software. Entering "ftp://dallas-music.com" i get the error message: "421 Can't change directory to /var/ftp/ [/]". I can however transfer files in control panel, but as I mentioned it's a pretty slow process.

It's been a busy day at work today. When I get time I'll give filezilla a try.

Do me a favor...open up "My computer" and type in the FTP address in the address bar. This will give you more options that opening up Internet Explorer and typing the FTP address.

Does that help any?

Yes doing it IE will only let you copy to your computer from the FTP site...using "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" (Windows 7) you will be able to copy file to the site dallas-music.com. BTW nice way to create a little traffic to your site....I'll just call you Gary M Smile Twisted Evil

I'm getting a "Windows can not access this folder" message.

The ftp address of my dallasmusic.org site is ftp://dal6779@dallasmusic.org/ so dallas-music.com may be something else as well. I probably have dallas-music.com ftp info on a computer in the back of the shop, but I'm short handed today and can't look for it.

If you notice, there's nothing for sale on dallas-music.com. Years ago I had hundreds of musical instruments and related gear listed for sale. I did ok with it, but 8-10 years ago I switched to selling everything on ebay. At this point all I use it for is to upload ebay pics.

And I don't do much ebay these days. I bought a pawn shop 2 years ago and don't the time for it. I actually still have quite a bit of music inventory I need to ebay if I ever get some free time.

So the point I'm making, there's no reason to plug my website at this point. Smile

There is really no reason to have your own website for hosting photos. If you aren't going to market or sell on the website..just ditch it and use one of the millions of free photo hosting websites out there. Then you don't have to mess with FTP at all!

Or...you could put a photo gallery application on your site with a built-in uploader. Dreamhost has one and I have used it...they are pretty slick and look nice.

Yeah I know, it's just that I've had that website for 10-12 years. I can't bring myself to let it go.

It appears there are some options available from my website host, but ftp would be the easier route. I already know how to use ftp software. I have no idea how to setup a photo gallery.
