I don't need to have all the bells and whistles, just component in>rgbhv out. I do all the adjustments after the fact.

Running the danger in touting my own horn but get the RTC2220 or if you don't want the gamma the RTC2000 (even cheaper). Excellent picture quality and has been proven to work with any projector up to 1080p.

Hey Chip

I have some Extron units here, CVC100 and CVC200 starting at $240. All BNCs in and out.

It's a relatively straightforward signal converter, so I don't think any great strides have been made in transcoders. There's no 3D version..Smile

Do they do proper color space conversion?

I have two here. An RTC2200 ( YPbPb to RGB w/Gamma ) and a Box1020 (RGB to YPbPr w/Gamma ) both are good quality units.

I took the RTC 2200 on vacation with me along with the PS3 and HDfury2. Nice combo

Did ya take it swimming? did it get a tan, and did that throw off the color spacing? Mr. Green

Unlikely, very robust design in a black case, made to handle the UV rays Very Happy

No, I was going to take it whale watching but the whales were nowhere to be seen. Smile

I bought a couple of CRT monitors to watch movies on and game with Thumbs Up

Whale watching will work too, just rinse off the salt afterward.

I still use an RTC2200 myself. Works great. Unlike the cheap ones out there it does proper HD/SD colourspace conversion, is sharp, doen't have a floating black level, etc.

See: http://www.curtpalme.com/RTC2200.shtm

Going by memory only (it's been a while) I would say no, it doesn't.

Actually and unfortunately it does. Increasing the gamma increases the gain and therefore the white level. I have tried to find a way around it, but making a really high frequency controllable attenuator is not trivial.

If you did consider a redesign to clamp the output level, Intersil has a neat IC that could make it simpler:

I wonder if the box 1021 raises white level.

As much as we need black boost, a raised white level is not very desirable for pic quality either.

Do htpc's do this properly?

Mike,

That's a nice opamp but unfortunately I need to control gain and I cannot clip the output.

I am pretty sure the BOX1021 does the same. Overall it is not that bad though, you adjust the gamma to your liking and then the gain control on the projector. After it is all set and done you will never have to touch it again. HTPC's do it differently by directly modifying the transfer curve and they will keep the same white level.

Is the NEC ISS component input board still available? Right now I'm using a borrowed switchable HDMI/component ISS input to experiment with. HDMI connected from a Motorola Fios box does not play well with it. I have to switch away and back up to 6 times to get it to hook up. When I use the component it switches first time every time.
I think if the HDMI chip was powered all the time it would work correctly. But as the card is switched away from and powers down edid needs to happen all over again on power up. Not a issue with component, hit or miss with HDMI.

Whatever I get will end up going through the ISS anyway so that input board just eliminates a few extra connections.
