I don't doubt these claims at all...
the only reason I wouldn't have one is price...I'm a cheap bastard.

If price is an issue, the CRT wins hands down

The colours out of the box are incredible, easily the match for my XG. The sharpness is fantastic, and the smooth image is drop dead gorgeous.

I've not seen any of the later model digitals is some time. I think I would like to check one out and I see that Best Buy has this same Sony VPL-HW15 on display in their Home Theater Model.
I'll see if i can get there today and see what the hype is all about...

No doubt there.
My JVC, even at a great price, was still 10x the net cost that I paid for my 1270. But then it really isn't fair comparing these two.

Especially the CRT that's already hanging in my HT!!
Like Ben, I'm a cheap bastard. My HT budget is nearly nil. Digitals will have to come down a looong way before I can justify coughing up the $$ for one.

My CRT would not fit comfortably in my new room, and the noise issue was also a bit of a bother. If it was still up I would have left it. The other thing that would have pushed me was HDMI etc. I found the moome cards and assorted issues a little expensive, $500 all said and done.
But clean install, then it was a no brainer. But for under $3000 it was a good buy. I still would love to see a Barco Cine9

Looking at Amazon as a sample, the VW60 is only $211 more than the HW15. So if that's what you *really* want, it's almost the same price.

Costco in Canada i selling the W60 for $2299 right now with a free bulb. The HW15 has a better picture, but you lose remote focusing and a few other things. But the contrast ratio is better on the HW15 so I went fo that.

Nice! They must not be offering that VW60 deal on the website. costco.ca says it's on sale ($400 off) for $2699, and no free bulb.

You may find over time that you miss your crt...
Since crt'ers have a negative view of digitals, they are usually very impressed when they first get one(this ain't bad!)...sometimes that fades a bit over time as you may miss certain things a crt image gives you.
For me it is the film-like smoothness...which is likely quite good on the Sony.

They take the $400 off at checkout.
Download the free Bulb coupon at: http://www.sony.ca/projectors/files/Sony_projlamp.pdf

Ken: Too bad you didn't have a bit more time to look at digitals, my buddy has two of the Epson 1080 lcd's and they look FANTASTIC, they are so close to CRT in black level that when its a quick fade to black, one that's not long enough for your eyes to re-adjust, you can't tell the screen is still lit at all.
My buddy has both the LCD and a G90 set up well, in the same room, so its an easy, easy thing to compare the two, and for the vast majority of material, the Epson looks noticeably better...the only time the Epson is not easily the better image is with movies like Pandorum, and most movies are not inky black for the majority of the scenes...

Nope, the HW15 is better than the 1080 full stop, much better native contrast ratio, blacks, colours, noise etc, etc etc. The newer Epson 8500 for absolute black is better, but not in other areas but both are amazing.
But the LCOS has better fill rate, sealed light path (LCD"s like the Epson still have dust blobs), and other advantages, better colours etc. The LCOS has a very CRT look about it. + The Sony looks gorgeous!!! The Epson's are cheap looking.
I am super happy with the Sony over the Epson and Panny, especially as in Canada the Panny is 50% more expensive than the USA, made the decision real easy.
If you saw the HW15 vs the 1080 you'd be even more impressed. Don't forget the Epson 1080 is 2.5 years older then the Sony HW15 as well.
Don't forget, I'm comparing to a Gamma adjusted CRT via a HTPC, much better black than most who have to raise brightness to bring out the detail, so lose the absolute fade to black. My XGLC was 100% dark at fade to black because of the calibration and complete control the HTPC gave me.

Then I'm shocked you didn't switch sooner...the in scene contrast ratio, and the focus of digitals is so far ahead of even the best crt's, if your projector has even better black than the Epson's I've seen, its indistinguishable from CRT in that respect and head and shoulders better in so many others...(PS: The Epson my buddy has I was referring to IS the 8500UB, sorry I don't really pay attention to the model numbers that closely...)

Yup the 8500 has better absolute blacks than the HW15 by a little bit, but not a huge amount, not enough that it makes any real difference.
But, until I had to take the PJ down there was no need to replace her. But once doen, and new theater construction, light cannon all the way now.
