Well this isn't a surprise!
I was using the projector to play some Crackdown 2 Demo, I left the room for about 10 minutes, and when I came back the projector was off, and wouldn't turn back on at all. I turned the master power off and unplugged it for about 15 minutes, plugged it back in and still no power.
The back LED panel doesn't say squat either... So today I will be spending more time rejuvinating the 9PG. Plus I also got my original Toshiba 2SC4288A chip for the horizontal deflection to install as well (Finally get to take the crappy NTE replacement out and put REAL back in )
So before I start working on it, any ideas what would have caused this (Aside from it and its components being 17 years old this month )

Have you checked the fuse? If the LED on the back doesnt come on to indicate standby mode when you apply power, id say the fuse has blown for a start, and for what ever reason, id look at the power supply before i got too keen to just fire it up, there may be a problem there.
If there is a problem and you find it has taken out the fuse, firing it up again may cause more damage. Replace the fuse with ONLY the correct type, never with a higher value. Im not sure if they are a slow blow, standard blow or fast blow, but replace with the CORRECT type.

Thanks Case,
I've taken out the power supply (Kind of a PITA where the PJ is at) and the fuse is good, soo that means its testing time!
I have decided that now since it has died, it is time to fully replace every capacitor in the unit, and restore whatever else needs to be restored.
The input board on my 9PG was badly corroded, not anymore, I just got done cleaning it up and checking it over, so one board down and several to go.
The PSU looks fine physically, and I didnt smell any burnt components in the entire projector (Probably a little late for that)
seeing as the unit failed while it was on I doubt that powering it on again would do anything, and when I did power it on again nothing bad happened (Nothing good either).
I dont suppose anyone in the wisconsin area has a bare chassis for a 9PG? one that is not rusted or corroded? I would like to get it for free if someone does have one, I dont want to stick any cash into non essential parts (Since I doubt the metal frame chassis is the issue), but if I could get ahold of a nicer chassis it would be nice.
Any other suggestions are welcome

OK, let's see if I can piss off someone else today.
DO NOT REPLACE ANYTHING ON THAT PROJECTOR UNTIL YOU'VE GOT IT IN RUNNING SHAPE.
It will be less painful to drill a 3/8ths inch whole in your own head

hahahaha! Yeah, keep the changes to a minimum and get the thing running again. Compounded issues are a B to diagnose as you can imagine. Unless your a repair super-freak, then ignore us

I do like to fix things and mod things, but in this case, Ill take your guys' advice and fix it first before I go any further. I still havent found anything bad from what I have tested, then again I'm not used to working on a system that has 10+ PCB's but it sure is fun
If I find the issue ill be sure to let you all know incase theres another 9PG'er with a similar issue. In the meantime I think Ill be shopping around for another one to use while I restore the 9PG.
Ah the joy of having nothing better to do than repair and improve a 17 year old peice of technology

Im sure we would all like to get something for nothing, but if you want it to work, its up to you to pay for that.

All it takes is patience and someone will have one they just want to get out of the way. Hey, thats how I got the 9PG, someone wanted to make room, good for me
Curt if you have lurked this topic yet, Do you have a spare 9PG LVPS? If you do would you consider a trade + some money for it? Im just wondering if youd be willing to do so, or if you have one for a good price (replacing over 70% of the parts in the LVPS due to age can get expensive)

O.K. so if you DO NOT REPLACE ANYTHING how can you put in the board you need to make it run properly?

Everything Curt has for sale he sells at a good price and very fairly so.
Have you actually TESTED this supply to see if it works or not yet? Some one will be able to tell you which pin on which plug to connect to common in order to bring on the power supply, and then you can go through and test the voltage outputs of each pin. No sense replacing this if it doesnt need to be replaced.
Do some proper testing, and then if you cant fix it, contemplate the expensive trap of throwing parts at it til you find the issue. At the end of the day, blindly throwing parts at something is not the way to go about fixing it.
Ill add to that, no one can really offer you much diagnostic help if you dont tell us what you have and havent done, and especially the results of questions or suggestions put to you.

well when you cant fin'd the issue, and I know its the power supply... no power at all, what else could it be? out of the thousands of LCD monitors I've fixed, no power has to be the top most common issue, and when there is no power the main reason was the power supply had gone bad.
Try fixing a samsung LCD monitor thats less than a year old with no power. You wont
Shotgunning a board is not hard to do, and as long as your absolutely sure what board is bad, shotgunning it in most cases will fix it. Plus it doesn't require much time, as long as your good with soldering which thankfully after all the years of experience I am quite capable with a soldering iron.
Now I know that a CRT projector and an LCD monitor are 2 TOTALLY different things, but like all electronics they have basic electrical concepts.
I am welcoming anyone who can tell me what leads to test on the LVPS...
Sorry if it sounded like a rant in any way. I didn't intend for it to

I don't think the "crappy NTE replacement" killed it.... I did some other research on this too, and posted some info for you elsewhere but I'm not sure if you noticed it. Google pulled up a few older threads on 9PG machines, and one person (Curt?) had recommended looking at the system board & ensuring that none of the switches on it were inadvertently pushed in or had some dust issues.
As for troubleshooting the LVPS, I'm not familiar with it enough to know what pins do what and what readings you should get off them.

I doubt the NTE killed it too, but I preffer original parts whenever possible, I have seen NTE's replacements not work for the applications they are supposed to work for when replacing a failed original part.
I've already put the new original Toshiba back in, I just can't test it yet because I have no power.

It's actually a Quantum Universe problem.
You left one Quantum Universe with your PJ working in it, when you left the room, but when you returned to that room, you entered a different Quantum Universe with a dead PJ in it.
Ever hear of "Schrodinger's Cat", this is the same thing, just involving your PJ.
All you have to do now is enter another Quantum Universe that has that PJ of yours working in it. It's really that simple. Don't ask me how to get there though, I'm trying to find some elusive Quantum Universe's that I would like to explore.

Find a service manual or another manual that will give you the pin out for all the outputs on the power supply, just cause its got no LED on the back doesnt mean its dead unless youve tested it and confirmed so.
Its simular in ways to a computer power supply, which turns on and off like a simple start/stop station, pressing the on button energises the power relay which latches it's self with a normally open contact, and pressing the off button breaks the circuit to the power relay coil, so it reverts to it's normally open state.
I dont know what the specs are on the 110 volt PGs as far as current draw goes, but if it is an equivelant max of the 230 volt version, itll be around 8 amps. The 230 volt version rates max current on the unit at 4.4 amps. With the potential of around 1,000 VA, id expect the relay to be a fair size and easily enough identified.
If you can find the on/off relay and see which wire supplies it, youll be good to go.

Someone is impatiently awaiting the return of 'Fringe'.
I think you've stumbled on how Curt manages to repair all these boards that go bad. He must have access to the universe that stayed with repairable rather than throw-away devices where they've advanced board level repair to a fine and well supported art. Now if he can only find the universe that has the impossible to find IC for SONY G90s...

It's also where all the missing socks disappear to when it's laundry day. The washer & dryer pair form a quantum tunnel machine allowing one of the 2 socks in a pair to disappear. Why doesn't anything else disappear? You don't wear anything else that is a 'pair', hence no twin to move to the alternate universe.
