Kiev,
The recommended level is around 16 ft/lmbs in theaters. I personally like a bright image and would like to be in the 20s. Gain or small image is the only way to do this. One avenue to take would be an UHG torus screen for larger sizes. I forgot how big the screen was, but one 9500 owner got 33 or so ft/lmbs on a Vutec UHG screen. This was measured by Chuchuf. You can sometimes find these screens on ebay for decent prices.

A DIY UHG screen is also an option, but you would be limited by the width of the material. It is simple in concept, but a little harder to implement. Basically, you would spray a translucent coating on some aluminized mylar and attach it to a Torus screen box. Unfortunately, mylar doesn't come any wider than 48". That leaves you with a 105" width scope screen.

A 105" wide scope screen sounds good to me. I think 15.4 Ftl. is pretty decent for the 96" wide screen i calculated above with Vutec Pearlescent White, but I'd like to know more about this DIY UHG material. What is the gain? Do you have any links?

If you did that, you'd be experimenting. I don't know of anybody who came up with a suitable translucent coating, and I suspect it's not too easy to get an even-enough coat. It's not like spraying opaque paint -- you have to get an exactly uniform coat all across the Mylar or you'll have varying gain across the screen. Not good.

Kiev,
The Pearl White is, I believe, around 2 to 2.5 gain.

The UHG is what I talked to you and James about regarding the mylar. I have a translucent coating that I can put on it to get the high gain, but I haven't tried spraying a whole screen. It would be a challenge, but doable. I can sell you some of the coating if you want to try. It is about a $1 an ounce. You would probably need around a quart. You might be able to take the mylar to a body shop and have them spray it, but you would need a way to see if you have the right amount of coats on it. You can get the mylar here:

In all honesty, you would be better off trying to find a used Vutec UHG screen. They come up from time to time on ebay and elsewhere. The biggest problem is shipping, as it is a hard screen.

Here is a pic I took of my UHG experiments. Top left is no pigment coating over mylar. Top right is maybe white pigment in the coating IIRC. Hard to see, but right underneath is some Wilsonart samples. On the bottom is Silverstar. My screen is a DIY painted screen. The pj was an XG that I just set up and probably kicked the table a couple of times.

Ok just checked a few sites. it's listed as 3.1 Gain for the Pearl Brite screens. But Silverstar has a gain of 6?!! does anyone know of a source for that stuff?

yeah, i guess I would be. but It might be something i could play around with. The design of these torus screens lends itself to experimentation...

It is a hard backed solid screen. Unfortunately, it can't be curved. Check ebay and videogon for Vutec UHG screens.
