Hey all,
Long time lurker, here. Really excited to see so many people interested in AV stuff.
Recently, I purchased a Sony VPH-1270Q projector for $75. Definitely the best purchase I've ever made. I've got it sitting on a desk, 2 ft off the ground, and 70" back from the wall I'm projecting on to. (Don't have a screen yet, but image quality is shockingly good, especially considering that the wall is painted light blue.)
For the past couple of weeks, I've been hooking it up to a Sony Vaio with an s-video connection, which worked extremely well, aside from a blue area at the bottom right of the screen, which never really caused me to fret too much. And, I'm still kind of afraid to mess around with the internal components - although I did take off the top cover, which has given me access to lots of new controls (haven't touched them yet). Overall - Excellent picture through S-video.
Last week, however, I decided to purchase a VGA to 5-BNC/RGB-HV cable so that I could utilize the full potential of the projector, and move up from the 480i I was getting through the s-video. Also, it seems that on the 1270q, certain settings (screen size, shift, etc.) are only available when you hook up through RGB-HV.
Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck getting the VGA to RGB-HV to work. The best description I can give of the picture is that the colors are extremely divergent. It looks a lot like the image I got before I realized that my projector had an optimal throw distance.
The weird part is: when the VGA signal from my computer first appears, everything looks great for a split second. Then, sure as anything, the screen flashes, and the colors become divergent. I can see well enough to do basic tasks, but there will be three renderings of everything on screen, displaced to the right and left of one another.
I figure that throw distance can't change based on my switching inputs (s-video to rgb-hv), can it?
Any ideas guys? I can take pictures if needed.
Appreciated,
Matt

Maybe someone else will come along and explain it a little better but, most projectors (the 1270 included) store adjustment settings in blocks grouped by frequency. Your projector is setup fine for 480i, but as soon as you switch to 1080i (or whatever), you need to store the new settings in a new block and do a fresh setup.
Check page 86 of the install manual for a better description:

That explains it justtaint - thanks! I apparently have to save a new group of color settings for the RGB-HV input. I guess the S-video in settings were previously saved on the machine, although, now that I've taken the hood off, I might tinker with those too.
I'm still unclear on why the picture looks okay, briefly, when it first starts. This is especially annoying because I'm a total newb at doing the adjustments myself.

I was lazy. All I have connected to my 1272 is my xbox 360 and I've never changed from 1080i. I assume it looks okay at first because its expecting 480i so it uses those settings, but then it realizes the higher resolution and changes to the resultant block. I think you can save the basic 480i settings to all blocks, and then when you connect RGBHV it isn't as far off.

When you save the settings for the firts time, you'll save your settings for that input frec. If you save it again, it will save those settings for all the frec's.
Have fun !

Thanks a ton, guys. I think I'm getting closer to a solution. Could you explain in more detail how to save the settings from my 480i frequency over to the 1080i ones? The manual doesn't seem to be to clear about this - it shows how they are arranged in order of Hz, but I can't figure anything out past that.

A single "save" key press saves adjustments to a single memory block. If you press and hold the save key for a couple of seconds, you'll get a system message that says "save to all memory locations?" or something along those lines. Then, I think it's up for yes, down for now.
