when I lower the upper blanking it's almost as if I cranked the brightness 20 clicks...the pic becomes somewhat washed out. I can correct by lowering brightness, but I'm wondering if something else is wrong.
Anyone see this before?

Yup - I've had this same problem on all my G70s. The problem goes away if I switch off the ABG. It appears when crossing the ABG line border. - But then everything is way too dark.
It was such a problem that it prevented me from using top blanking until I found an old firmware set of controller boards which meant I could switch off ABG and adjust G2 myself.
However, I'm still ignorant as to why it happens.

Interesting.
I don't use top/bottom blanking so I never noticed. I only use left/right to hold the image off the edge of the tubes at higher scan frequencies.
I always run with ABG enabled. IMO the image is more stable.
