|
|
Hello all,
I finally moved my 9PG to the location in the theater where it will be sitting permanantly.
When I powered it on and went to switch inputs, there were no menus, or any sort of OSD... However, all functions still operate, I just cant see the menus or slider bars etc...
any ideas??? Its really hard to calibrate a projector when you cant see the functions on the screen...

Could be that you need to hit the DISPLAY button.

If it was that obvious I would not have posted this, I can push every button on the remote and there is zero green OSD menus , the functions all operate and when a signal is input into the projector an image shows on the screen like it should, I just cant see the menus/function controls on screen whatsoever.

You'd be surprised how often that is the solution... If you truly did nothing but move the projector then probably re-seating the boards will work. I'm sure this has come up before so a search here or at AVS in the CRT forum should yield something.

Not to state the obvious but you do have it connected to a source?

Yep its connected to a source, wish the issue was that simple, like I mentioned above, I get an image from my source no problem, the problem is there are no visible OSD's to calibrate the projector, although they all still work.
When I press adjustment ont he remote, then put the 2580 passcode in, hit enter, then hit point, or position etc... and press the arrow keys on the remote, I get the expected result of pushing said buttons, but I cannot see the green OSD to tell me how far I am going...
If I was good enough I wouldn't need an OSD, but I have owned this projector for 5 days....
Help me CRT Overlords! I will make any sacrifice you request!!

Is the green tube working when the picture is being displayed from your source? I know it's obvious even though you see apicture it may not have any green in it. One loose wire and you might not even have green.

Yes the tube is working, the source image looks just as it should, except not converged, All colors are present... Is something toast?

Could be, but I think it's still just a dirty connector or loose wire, but I'm not an NEC guy.
Hang around and someone who knows will chime in.

Ok, this is a BIG GUESS but my memory seems to tell me there is a switch on the system board that turns off/on the OSD. I'm on the road and my external HD is in my bag somewhere so I cant check the manual for sure. But look on the system board at the switches and the ink stamp next to them.
If there is one and it is on switch it off and on again just to be sure.
If no switch then I cant check until late tomorrow.

Thanks for that tip, Ill check the board to see if its there, I hope thats all it is, I can't imagine why you would purposely disable the OSD though... you already need a passcode to get into any vital settings (at least mine does).
Ill check it out and see if it works

Something else you could try is to run at some other resolution than the one you're having trouble with. I remember having this problem once when first powering up an NEC XG. After getting the menu to show at the other res it then worked when I switched back to the desired resolution.

When you powered it up did you see the green input box when you had no source turned on (just turned the PJ on itself)? I get no green text when powering up either,
Ill have to check those switches when I get back later this afternoon, I hope you guys are right and this fixes my issue (I REALLY miss my 9PG...)
Im using my cheapo Sony VPL-BW7 I bought just to hold me over until I got the 9PG, but I would like to go back to the 9PG A.S.A.P. because IMHO it just obliterates the IQ of the Sony digital, the only thing the digi has is its perfect geometry, and with the sony I have also confirmed that aside from a little softness on the edge focus, my focus is pretty damn good on the 9PG...
WHY did NEC have to be so difficult.... I fix their LCD Monitors on a daily basis (and usually the problems they get are user created) but otherwise are completely reliable....
wish the 9PG wanted to be reliable

Do check those switches on the system board, otherwise try ''ctrl', 'display'. That toggles the OSD on and off.
If that doesn't work, I'd say your system board took a dump, and I might be able t repair it.

Thanks for the suggestions curt,
also, if my board did take a dump (I assume the "system board" would be one of the 3 boards in the sheilded box between the blue and green tubes?) and I had to have you repair it, how much do you think it would cost? I dont want to spend a lot on this projector since I only paid a few hundred bucks for it,
also curt I am curious about the focus on my red tube, and somewhat my green tube, I can get the center perfectly focused but the edges are somewhat blurry... now when all 3 are converged and displaying, the image is pretty damn close to the :O omg factor, but just going by how clear my blue is (Odd how the blue is so easily focused on this PJ) I would suspect the red and green would be as easy or easier to focus... plus having a mint red tube you would think that would make it easier too... the blue and green have some wear, but as stated the green and blue mostly, are best focused overall...
I've done the focus/astig magnet adjustments (Whoever messed with them last had very bad eyesight), but I just cant get the same clarity out of my red tube that I do get with my blue, If I could get that one focused in like the blue, the image would be quite above the acceptable level for me

Okay,
I pulled the system board and yes there are 2 switches and also 2 push button type switches, I flipped the switches back and forth and tried it out and no change...
I should also mention that I never once smelled the "Magic smoke" and nothing smells fried on anything in the entire projector....
also when I turned it on and put my source signal to it, it had problems locking on or something, the image was there then it kind of flicker faded out, hit the input again and it came on like it should, and also my amplitude cannot be adjusted horizontally, vertically yes, but horitzontal it doesnt want to, and the image kind of "wobbles" left to right or expands and contracts about an inch or so on both sides.
Is it dying? If theres more than one issue then I dont know if its worth repairing... such a shame since the picture I had on it was quite nice
If this projector is truly dead then I wont be able to have another CRT for a while, unless someone donates one

Also sorry for double posting, but I did try the ctrl+display and that had no effect as well, and changing to different resolutions had no effect either

Where are you located at, maybe your next door to someone that can help you.
These PJ's are usually real easy to diagnose, the only problem is, you need a source for swapping out boards. I'm in the San Diego area and could help if you are close by, maybe your close to someone that has a similar PJ and is willing to help.
