What magnetics did you not put on besides the CPC, they wont matter but the focus coils will i'd think.

None Nash. Out of the box, a quick inspection, and into the pj, then put on my 2/4/6's. I'm NOT saying the person I got them from did anything wrong BTW...just curious what would cause one tube to be The Lone Ranger. He packed them in VDC boxes with their custom made suspension but things can happen in shipping.
It isn't something I can't correct later with zone (IIRC) but learning something new is always good.

Wait these are bare tubes? there is no way you can connect a tube with no magnetics. the deflection coils and convergence should be there right? I hope so!

No no man. They came to me with yokes and coils already installed. Sorry for the confusion. Laughing That's hilarious to think I could get the geometry as good as it is without anything on the necks. Dude you have me confused with somebody A LOT smarter. Laughing

I have the Vertical board out and on the bench in front of me. I'm going to change out the 3 56K's for the anamorphic mod...I don't like how they're chipped and probably have been overheated too seeing as R704 has a lifted foil side trace. (although R704 doesn't have anything to do with the Blue circuit).

Weird thing is this was in the set with old tubes and the blue didn't have geometry issues like it does now. The guy really heated the snot out of them from the looks. I'm going to see if blue is straightened out by replacing those resistors. I have every value BUT 56K so will have to wait until tomorrow. Evil or Very Mad

Put 68k's in there and you can get 2.35 aspect ratio if you use 1920x800p@72 hz Wink

the grid might straighten out if you move the convergence coil, if its not lined up perfectly with the deflection coil it can make weird bumps and dips in the girds.

72Hz...BWAAAHAAAHAAA. Mr. Green I'm the poster child for champagne dreams on a beer budget. Right now I'm too busy trying to re-invent 'movin pit-chers to chase after more technology. Laughing

I thought of the convergence coil too before yanking the vert board but I'd rather go from here with components and workmanship I can trust.
OK...done posting. Embarassed

I thought I was onto something when I noticed VDM R67 had been removed with nothing but short leads left. Turns out the Rev History says it's a DNP correction. Damnit.

I'm still digging into the VDM and HDM. I can ramp PIN (sides, top and bottom) a little bit from NULL; almost enough to get the side PIN I need but if I go below 26 I lose HV. Conversely I lose HV if I ramp it to ~58. SKEW suffers from the same HV dropout except it's MUCH touchier. I can only deviate from null 3 or 4% either way before HV drops out. It's definately in the PIN-SKEW circuits (spanning multiple boards) because I can ramp H&V up and down at will with no HV drop.

To start from square one I reinstalled the OEM components at D57 and R156 with no change. This precludes using a variation of 16.1k Chris Stephens recommends. OEM is something like 14.3k for R156 IIRC.

Nash suggested I start at U8, and it's opamp U701... but I have no idea how to test them other than with a DMM and look for +/- 14.5v. I don't want to poke around with the relatively large probes and cause a problem so I'll not get at them just yet. There's a TLO84CN (U701) from a CMM I could swap in if I were positive that was the problem.

I don't have any DAC8840F's for U8...and if you guys have any of them I'd strip those out before tossing the boards.
You can't buy those exact part numbers.. not that I could find in a half hour Google search anyway.

There's a modern day equivalent here:
http://www.newark.com/stmicroelectronics/tl084cn/ic-op-amp/dp/89K1105

or a substitute with better bandwidth (4Ghz!) and lower noise here:
http://www.newark.com/stmicroelectronics/tl074acn/operational-amplifier-op-amp-ic/dp/89K1718

Even though I have a VDM, CLM, and SAB coming I just can't give up on this thing. I want to fix it! Rolling Eyes (Yup...OCD) Not being a teck makes it a daunting task to say the least.
Any testing tips, or links to newb electronics basic component testing sites would be greatly appreciated.

I repaired my broken spare HDM and no longer have HV drop. I'm working on my newer HDM now and found three components that need replacing so far. Replaced C533, C507, and Q501 on the spare. C507 is bad so far on the newer HDM.

TIP: (Nash's tip) If you need exact replacement parts look to your CMM (CCM) for them if you've got one kicking around. Chances are you have what you need to repair your HDM without leaving the house. Thumbs Up

Caps all replaced with same value but 50v 105c (except C507)

It sure does! SOOO much better learning to fish than begging for fish all the time. Embarassed

I couldn't have done it with any of the other 3 DMM's I have. I resurrected a Fluke 23 Series II and love this meter! If you pay attention to it while testing different type components it actually teaches you how a cap or diode should respond in a given application. Too cool! Thumbs Up

Now I need a scope! MWUAHAAHAAHAAAAA Twisted Evil

If you are interested in a scope, let me know. I have two, and I would love to part with one. I have one that I bought in college, and then I have a nicer Tektronix I picked up a few years ago. Just never got around to ever listing my original.

LOL, I'm not on a misson of protest. If you really think about the stuff I have said.....I dont think that deep down you would disagree.

Nash, if you had a secret recipe for something that was keeping your business somewhat alive and if others got that recipe and started posting it would you not feel funny? Maybe not jump up and down mad but just kinda like........damn.....

And really, you guys are talking Marquee stuff. A projector that there seems to be hundreds out there in service and the HDM and VDM are probably still a large part of Curts bread and butter. Your not talking an old video only set. Your talking large current use boards that Curt probably still has a larger percentage of boards that need to be repaired.
