I am in need of a projector that will be primarily used outdoors during football games, some games are scheduled for the afternoon. Most are scheduled for the evening? I know a CRT projector gives the best image, but I don't know if there is one suitable for outdoor use.

I dont think you are going to find a CRT suitable for outdoor, DAYTIME viewing. You're going to need a real light cannon. I'd think a digital is better suited.

No projector of any kind is going to be suitable for afternoon viewing outdoors - especially not a CRT. Even with a fairly bright digital though, the picture is going to be very washed out in late afternoon. If you could build some kind of trellis around the screen to shade it, angle it away from the brightest light, and use a high-gain ambient-light-rejecting screen, you might be OK with the evening games... But, afternoons are going to be tough, and the whole mess will look MUCH better after sunset.

My brother-in-law took a digital and projected it on the side of an adjacent building when he was in college at his fraternity. They had outdoor Ohio State parties that way. The makeshift screen had to have been 24'X24'. It wasn't the prettiest picture, but it worked. It can be done, but not with a CRT. Not sure what picture your looking to get, but a cheap digital you won't mind killing on high contrast and brightness is the way you want to go.

Rear projection is much better in high ambient light than front. The problem with front projection in this application is the screen is all about reflecting light. It doesn't care what the source is. Rear projection is about emitting light so it is not as sensitive to ambient light.

I have a complete set up I've never used if you are interested. It consist of a Barco Helois/new 6000 hr bulb and a 10 x 10 fast fold screen that includes both front and rear projection surfaces along with curtains. Let me know if you're interested. At one time, I thought I might do some hosting but never had time.

CRT is not the way to go for outdoor.

There are several outdoor LCD TV - Sunbrite, Pantel, Runco. They work great in the shade. Sunbrite goes up to 55"

If you're set on a projection system, look at the Screen Innovations Black Diamond screen.
