Someone told me once if that resistor is burnt, that it indicates shorted diodes in the quadrupler portion of the HVPS. So beware there could be more wrong..

The material in the potted section just swelled a little, not softened.

Then I found the burnt resistor, gone completely, and the burnt circuit board.
more to come.

.

Is this one that failed in the same projector with the exploded fuse? Or was it out of something else?

OK, a recap.
The burnt resistor was found in a Revision A7 HVPS,
The Revision A1 does not have the resistor.

The Revision B series has no resistor also. The exploded fuse HVPS x3.

I am about to open up another A7 to see if I can find the resistor.

Man, is my workshop a mess after doing 3 hvps's now.

Cheers

This one is a Rev: C7 and had the resistor.

What is in place of the resistor in the ones that do not have it?

I just looked at a few more prints that I have on some other model Spellman HVPS's and none of them show a resistor in that location. Just a direct connection to the first cap..

So I'm guessing that resistor is just a suppression device that was tried in a few various revisions.

well, here is another problem,
just opened a Revision A7, found no resistor............ crap.

That means, no 2 HVPS's are the same.
some have the resistor, others do not.

now to clean up the mess.

Cheers

isn't the C revisions a 34Kv supply??

I only have revision A and B's.

If no resistor, then a direct link from the transformer to the 6Kv capacitor.

Cheers

Yes it is.

Did you find any reminents of a resistor in the compound? Or just burnt stuff?

I'm beginning to wonder if there was actually a resistor there to begin with . I had absolutely nothing also. Maybe the wire itself just burned up and charred the potting compound. I only thought a resistor based on 1 of the prints I have. But the others showed no resistor.

I can not tell, as it really is pretty much ash, which would make sense with your comment of just the potting material burning,
rather than a component burning up!!.

cheers
