Any reason you're saying 9-inch rather than 8-inch? Just because they're actually worth something? Smile

Oh, and you don't have to worry about it with an Ampro because it'll fail whether there's a power outage or not, so there's no sense throwing good money after bad on a UPS... Wink

So I managed to nuke a Barco 909 all by myself, and it wasn't intentional, or due to stupidity.

I was working on an HDM (8 hours, and I finally nailed it!), and was testing the HDM without one of the MOSFETS that was blown, so all I wanted to do is power the set up for about 10 seconds, and since the remote is slow to react, I had my finger on the main power button, pushed in slightly to release it as soon as the set powered up for 5 seconds.

The dog brushed against my leg, and my finger slipped, turning the set off. Instinctively, I pushed the button back in, so the main AC power was disconnected literally for 1/4 second or so. Poof! Blew the AC input board, which on the 909 is full of components.

Also, I sold a retubed G90 to Hong Kong a month ago, and about 30 hours in, the customer had a power failure, which spot burned all three tubes. He's since run the set for 100 hours, and the chassis is fine.

So I implore all of you, GET A 1000 watt UPS for your high end CRTs. This doesn't seem to apply to the Marquees and BArco 1209s, but this 909 failure really pissed me off, after spending 8 hours on the HDM, finding a cracked SMT solder joint due to 'someone' here doing a piss poor job of packing the board in a shoebox.

(no, it wasn't any of the usual suspects that you'd expect would be sending me a 909 board.. Mr. Green Mr. Green

Rant off. Thumbs Up

Not glad to see this happened to you but I am glad to see that it just isn't the G90.
If you own a G90, without a doubt do this!!

Gawd youz guyz are slow. I'm light years ahead of you. I've had a giant rack mount UPS connected to everything in my theater for years. I swear by it.

If I (hmmm) when I switch to digital it will even make more sense. The last thing you want is a power outtage with a smokin hot lamp and no fan to cool it.

It still baffles me how many people have this misconception. But I guess thats good for us Ampro owners to keep prices low. Very Happy

Do you count the dot fix and line fix &etc as increased performance? I call them bug fixes.

I don't know if I agree with this. Sure, you always want to cool down a projector, esp. if it's a digital that's for portable use.

But.. in a fixed installation, I don't see an issue with pulling the plug on a running digital... as long as you then leave it off until the bulb is cold.

The only downside I can see is PERHAPS that the heat buildup without the forced air cooling might cause an issue with heating up boards or plastic surrounding the bulb, but from the digitals I've had here, the bulb was always far away enough from boards to cool down by itself without the fan cooling.

The funny thing is that these are the only two CRT brands still being produced. Since Scott's specialty is power supplies, my guess is he has this issue covered.

It simply amazes me how people can cry about spending a few bucks on a good APC UPS
to protect thousands of dollars of equipment = I have seven running PC's and several + PJs,
(plus the family room AV system with samsung plasma, marantz receiver, bluray, etc) and about
seven UPS and multiple surge protectors in line. You don't need a true sine wave ups, but you do
need one that is over rated for the load - 1000 VA is low for a 9" machine, I use 1300VA APC units
with over/under voltage transformers, in line with high end Tripplite surge protectors. I also
have intalled a new ground system for the house (8 foot copper plated steel rod with 6 gage
wire) Evereything runs through the UPS and surge, sat, phone, network, etc.

We just had a massive lightning strike today within ~50 yards of the house - everthing here still works -

The neighbors = not so much....

You don't have to agree with it. As long as I do, thats all that counts Laughing
I started out with a digital and had more than one lamp pop without the post purge fan running.

big deal. these are so minor they're almost non-issues. The Sony AKB line is 10 times more obnoxious.
I think the topic was more concerned with which brand had major problems, like something that could nuke all 3 tubes. Only one winner here that i know of

Both Ampro and Marquee LVPS have a dedicated circuit to shut-off the power supply during a brownout condition. Other projectors? I don't know.

The director of engineering at Ampro came up with the idea of having brown-out shutdown after the LVPS was designed. The circuit is crammed into a little bitty corner. I hate it when the boss actually comes up with a good idea.

Mine has tens of thousands of hours on it. Has it gone that far without issue, hell no and no one elses would.

In about 30K hours it's...

1. had two HVPS's
2. replaced a focus board
3. sucked a tube
4. been completely re-tubed 3 times.

Still waiting for the Parker screen-shot war but alas the keeper of the Quee keeps sacking out Wink

And there is the biggest issue of all! How do I get one if all of the owners are happy and satisfied? I mean even the Navy doesn't seem to be throwing them away. Mr. Green

Curt,

So what brand of DSP are you hinting at? Lexicon, Eventide?

To clarify, Barco 12xx do not have this problem, right? what about 8xx?
