We inherited an NEC MultiSync 6PG Xtra (PG6200G) when we bought our house 2 years ago. It's been working fine until 2 weeks ago. We turn it on w/the remote and it warms up for 15 minutes. During the warm-up all 3 color tubes are shining brightly. When the 15 minutes is over, all 3 lights go out briefly (1-2 seconds), then the picture shows up onscreen with the Blue & green tubes shining brightly, the red tube is dim for 1-2 seconds, and then the red one goes out completely leaving just the blue and green tubes shining.

Last night, we disconnected all of the colored wires to the unit(one by one so we wouldn't get any mixed up) and reconnected them. We also unplugged the unit from the ceiling outlet, then plugged it back in (hoping this might "reset" it & get it working correctly). And we unplugged and replugged in all the colored wires to the iScan Pro converter. Alas, these measures only succeeded in making the picture "jump" (like a really fast scroll) and now the picture is completely unviewable. What was a minor annoyance (no red tube) has now escalated into a completely unwatchable picture.

We are totally untechnical people (as if you couldn't already tell)... and can't do anything more ourselves. I just have 3 questions:

1/ What do you think the problem / problem(s) might be (dumb it down for me, please)?

2/ Who can we call for help? I understand that this equipment is fairly sophisticated & that it takes a real expert to correctly diagnose & fix it. I have no idea who in northern Virginia (Vienna) would know enough about this to help us.

3/ If you were me & couldn't do anything w/it yourself, would you start over again with new technology and not put any money into the diagnosis and/or fix?

Thanks for your opinions / advice & help.

When the set acts up, do the test patterns still look white? This could be a DVDO problem, not a projector.

Sorry, but don't know what test patterns are.... when it's warming up, the screen is just white with the 15 minute countdown.

Right, once it's past that, put up the focus test pattern, the crosshatch, or whatever. Are those still white?

Do you have the setup remote? You need to put up one of the internal test patterns via the 'test' button.

Not sure if your location of noVA is actually Northern VA. I live in the area, Leesburg, and would be glad drop by and take a look. I have a 6200 (actually 5 of them) and might be of some help in identifying what might be happening. I could also maybe give a better description of the problem back to Curt.

Wallace, you're a godsend. I'll happily take you up on your offer to drop by & take a look. We live in Vienna (take 7 east then right on Beulah). I can pay a nominal sum to cover your gas & time. We're around this holiday weekend if you're available. Thanks so much!

I am very sorry I have not replied back, nor stopped by. I have a bunch of excuses, but that's all they are: Excuses!

We could maybe try for this weekend?

I know, I know. Some of the IBM folks I used to work with called it "Lookout!". Just gotta know how to manage the .pst files. I've been using it for years now and am comfortable with it.

BTW, K and I were able to fix the "no red" problem over the phone. When I heard the red worked fine during the 15 minute warm up period, but then stopped when it switched to an input source, i kinda figured it had to be outside of the pj.

The red wire had come lose back by the KVM switch (I assume that was there to connect a pc and was done by the previous home owner). The KVM switch was between the i-SCAN Pro and the pj. When K started tracing the wiring, noticed that the red wire (coax) had been disconnected. K plugged it back in and WOW!!! Full picture!

I also helped walk thru getting the warm-up screen disabled. Going to walk K thru looking at the static convergence soon, just to make sure it is still good.

Hi Don, I just want to say "thanks" again for taking the time to help me w/the projector. I was so excited that you were able to get it going again. I'm sorry I didn't phone again last Thurs night - several things happened & took up my whole evening.

we went down Friday night to watch a movie & when I turned it on, the same problem is happening again. I checked all the connections & everything is hooked up. Nothing changed after we got it working on Tues night so I'm baffled as to what made the red tube go out again. We ended up watching the movie anyway - kind of yellowish...

I've kept your # & I'll try you again one evening this week. thanks again for all your time - I truly appreciate it & am just sorry the fix wasn't permanent.
