What are you using to control it?
I have started a project just like that (or close)
Mine uses rollers and cloth just like yours.
For motors and control I use two HiTec brand (HS-785HB) high torque multi-turn sail winch servos and a Pololu serial servo controller. I've programmed my Crestron system to send the correct code to the Popolu controller to make the servo's stop at the correct position. The speed at whitch the servos turn is also programmable.
One button push on my touch panel sends the screen to a pre-set aspect ratio and it stops exactly where it's supposed to every time. Thumbs Up

The title of this thread is "Electronic Masking: DIY and very easy Smile"

The motor is designed for electronic shades applications and fits inside the roller tube that the mask winds up around. Below is a photo of the motor.

The motor costs $135 from AV-Outlet and it has all the control system integrated on a small board that is encased inside the motor housing. You set the end limits with the IR (or RF) remote that you buy with the motor. You must use the original remote to set the limits (you can't use a universal). Once the limits are set, the screen masks its self to the exact same position every time and it does so perfectly.

Here is the section from the LT30IR manual on setting the limits. It takes 15 seconds to do.

So on mine, the OEM remote up button masks to 235, and the down button opens up the screen to 178. I have a button on my universal remote that closes the screen and at the same time switches my Lumagen to 818x1920 72Hz output mode Wink I have another macro that opens the screen and switches the Lumagen output to 1080p 72Hz.

craigr[/img]

We're on the same page. When I'm watching std def material, it automatically opens to 1.33. Hd starts at 1.78. From there if I need to there is buttons on the touch panel for other aspect ratios. There is no IR or RF in my theater. All the equipment is rack mounted in a different room. The projector and screen controls are RS-232. Bullit proof. Thumbs Up

I just meant that the masking system I put together is very simple electronically and mechanically. Comparing that to all the earlier designs that I have seen with all kinds of components; electrical and mechanical.

Having the stop points controlled inside the motor really cuts down on complexity of the electronic design. In fact there really isn't any electronic work to do. Just plug the power supply into the motor and the wall recepticle. Plug the IR or RF receiver into the motor... done with that.

And then having the motor actually fit inside the roller tube and drive the roller tube that way cuts out most of the mechanical work. No belts, cables, or the like...

I would love to run Crestron here as well, but I haven't been willing to spend the money yet. Later maybe Wink

Craig,
What model# are those motors? If they are the ILT series, Crestron can interface with them directly using a C2N-SSC-2
shade controller. It would make for a very slick installation.

The one I used is the LT30IR, and I don't know if this particular one will work with the Crestron "C2N-SSC-2 Somfy Shade Controller" or not. However, any of the Somfy motors that I am aware of can be controlled with RS-232 through the Somfy "1822183 Multi-Link Head Rail Control" module. Here is a link:

http://www.av-outlet.com/index.html?target=dept_627.html&lang=en-us

You can use Crestron with the motors, I just don't want to for myself... maybe one day.

I am glad you guys like it Smile

The project won't take you long if your install goes like mine did. I am serious when I say it only took five or six hours once I had all the parts and supplies here. I spent more time waiting for the trim paint to dry the other day than I did building the masking system.

Oh yeah, I put the trim up a couple days ago and it looks SWEET all enclosed. I used some really fancy 4 3/8" trim to cover everything and I love the look now.

Craig,
You might as well get Crabb working on incorporating this into the Irule.WinkSmile

Honestly, I am not sure why anyone would want a Crestron with the Irule as a less expensive option.

I use a digital projector now but I need something like this more than ever. This may be important for a CRT FP but it's essential for a digital projector because the entire screen that is supposed to be black bars lights up a bit without it.

What's Irule? I haven't ever seen it and I have never had a client who has it wither.

Yeah, a digital with a 16x9 screen needs masking even worse than a CRT. With digital, you really need the screen to always be the same size as the image. That's one of the reasons why 235 screen are so popular in combination with anamorphic lenses.

This is the stuff that Seymour recommends. I haven't kept up with this stuff, as I know there are other places to get good fabric. Chris is a good guy (like all people from Iowa Wink), so I am sure this is one of the best fabrics at a reasonable price.

So I got a swatch of this velvet from SyFabrics sent to me. It's a very nice material and is really a fantastic material for $7 a yard plus shipping. However, this weekend I took the swatch with me to Jo Ann's fabrics and compared it with the velvet they have there. Jo Ann's has a really really really nice "Black Premier Velvet" at $27 a yard.

IMHO the "Black Premier Velvet" is better than the black velvet from SyFabrics because it is thicker, darker, it matches the stock Stewart screen frame better, and it has a shorter pile length. I think the shorter fibers will be better because I was worried that the Sy velvet would look a little weird after it gets rolled and unrolled many times. I think the piles might start to get bent over with the Sy velvet.

However, the velvet from Sy was only going to be about $35 delivered and the Jo Ann's velvet was going to be near $100. I decided that it wasn't worth paying $65 more for the better Jo Ann's velvet... but when I got home I did some searching and found a 50% off coupon code for online purchases of one item from Jo Ann's. The 50% off coupon code is KCCF178 and it reduced the total for the Jo Ann's velvet to only $51 shipped.

So I decided that I would go with the Jo Ann's velvet instead. I will post final photos with the trim once the new velvet is installed probably next week.

Interesting observation, Craig. I was thinking of ordering some for my windows. I will look at the Jo Anns stuff, whenever I drive by one. MM over at AVS had found a place that supposedly had good velvet, but I don't remember the name. I think the other place was Guilford of Maine or something like that.

The Jo Ann's velvet soaks up light like crazy. I can hard tell when a movie is non-scope and I have my mask in place and project on it.

On a side note I never found a good way to cut the Jo Ann's velvet cleanly. I'll be interested to see what you come up with when you try to cut it.

Needed to search for this thread today so I figured I would update that the system is still running perfectly and that I did upgrade to the Jo Ann's velvet.

Whenever clients come over they want me to build one for them... so far I have always declined Wink

I have used the upolstery grade velvet from Syfabrics for screen frames. Very heavy stuff, 100% cotton, and very black. They don't often have it, and is up there in price. I'll have to check out the JoAnnes stuff!

To cut the velvet best you should get fabric scissors, they cut little triangles to the edges so it doesn't fray.

Walter,

Craig comments on the spring assist a couple of times on page 1 of the thread...

This is what pulls the mask at the bottom down when I open up the screen to 178. It also keeps the fabric taught when I close the screen to 235.

Here's the page with the actual components:
http://www.av-outlet.com/en-us/dept_513.html

Thanks again for this thread, Craig. It's looking pretty likely I may be moving out of state this summer and therefore losing my theater. Sad

I won't likely have any time to build a whiz-bang dedicated room in the new place, and instead will be throwing together something pretty temporary in nature... Paint, carpet, lighting, and on-wall acoustic treatments will probably be the most of it. What little time I do have to spend on it, I'll spend on tweaks like this masking instead of heavy work like double-drywall, building racks, and that sort of thing. So, this is one of those things I'm really looking forward to.

Thanks!
