Come clean Paul..... |
That's pretty funny... I noticed he listed his location as SF (same location as FH Video) but I didn't make the connection that his username was "Paul Lei FH" and that he was trying to be sneaky about steering the discussion towards a link for where the new/old stock is available for sale.
This is the first sign that I've ever seen of FH trying to move these NIB G90's. They get mentioned every few years, but unless someone is doing an insurance replacement, or maybe some rich dude overseas generically specifies "I want the best, regardless of cost", I've always thought it was sad to have these depreciating year after year after year, plus the storage costs. Unless secure, climate-controlled storage space in SF is cheaper than I imagine. Plus the cost of insuring unsold stock. I don't know the numbers, but even 100 unsold units at $19K... that's $2M of inventory sitting untouched for 7-8 years.

I doubt that Fu Hou has 100 pj's in stock.. well 100 G90's
The story i was told was that they had some kind of "family" connection w/ sony and they move a TON of sony pro video stuff.
So If they are pushing them you'd think they would drop the price.

Regardless of the actual quantity, it's gotta be a tough position to be in. Curt made that realization with his stock and sales years ago, but at least he could maintain margin by managing his purchasing costs as well.
How do you drop the price without decreasing the perceived value of the remaining stock?
What would you place the value of a NIB G90? Certainly not $19K.
I think you could probably find a couple of buyers at $10K.
Maybe 10 buyers at $8K.
Maybe 20 buyers at $6K.
Maybe 40 buyers at $4K.
Of course, when building a $50K-$100K HT, the cost of any projector is almost insignificant. $19K vs $4K for a projector... BFD.
Audiophiles and videophiles are a funny bunch when it comes to performance and perceived value. At this point I think it comes down to salemanship... maybe finding 100 potential buyers at $19K isn't really that much harder than finding 100 potential buyers at $5K.

The story I heard was that FH bought an entire shipping container (or two) of them - the last off the line from Japan. So, 100?Maybe not, but that's about the number I heard he bought. But, I could be wrong - that's total rumor. He may still sell half a dozen of them a year, but I doubt it at this point. He was still pushing them hard at CEDIA 3 years ago.... Had it set up next to the RS1... My review might still be around.
Selling 7-year old new/old stock. Crazy! Wouldn't you just love to know how many he bought and what he paid for them?

Yeah, but like Clarence said, that's a delicate balancing act... It's true the value isn't going anywhere but down, but then if you start cutting the price and the word gets out, you'll never sell any of the rest for any more than that... In fact, people would start using it against you. The scene from Planes, Trains and Automobiles where Steve Martin is trying to buy the cab comes to mind... "Surely, if you took $12,000 from Joe Blow, you'd take $11,000 from me..."
