the barco has higher bandwidth and the most advanced controls, its a no brainer really deciding between a g90 and a 909.

People who have seen both (unfortunately I haven't so this is all 2nd hand) say that the performance is VERY close..... and thats with the G90 in stock trim. The digital adjustments over so many zones may allow the geometry and convergence to be setup slightly better and perhaps not have a tendency to drift over time on the Barco. The lack of color filtered lenses is a real drawback on the 909 though.

Mike Parker who has loads of hands on experience with both chassis' should be the best equipped to provide an answer here.

I know it pisses people off, but I think the G90 is overrated. You would probably be better off buying a 9" Marquee or Barco from Curt.

I guess we'll have to agree to differ on that opinion. Sure there are some weaknesses in the design but overall its been said by many that Sony did many things right when the G90 was engineered. Those weaknesses such as noise in the video chain are being addressed with Mike Parkers mods.

I too would say the Cine 9 is the pinnacle of CRT technology but with the new mods I think even that performance will be surpassed, and probably by some considerable margin. Right, Mike? Wink

So, you don't think tse could equal the Cine 9 with the 9500? I have yet to see it any independent performance tests done on all of the machines.

9" 1080P CRT is still too expensive for me. Sad

You can't really compare the bandwidth of the two machines head to head. Yes, on paper the Barco Cine 9 is 180Mhz and the Sony G90 is 135Mhz.

From engineers I've talked to here the two numbers can't really be compared. The bandwidths are calculated different ways and there are so many other factors that affect the signal chain.

The important thing to consider is that the differences between these high level projectors won't even be seen unless the person setting it up really knows what he's doing and does an enormous amount of work to make it right (for example, from the ground up magnetic setup).

I've seen a lot of higher end CRT projectors (8" and 9" EM focus machines) installed that looked like crap compared to simpler ES machine simply because the person with the ES machine knew what they were doing while the person with the higher end machine didn't know their raster from their image area (let alone open up the projector and tweak the 2/4/6 pole magnetics).

thats a lame comparison.
people who dont know what they are doing will never get a decent picture regardless the es vs em 8inch vs 9 inch.
what i want to make clear is that if i had that kind of money to spend i would definitely go for the barco and the bandwidth has got to mean something.
its not only the controls that are better on the barco but the barco doesnt streak either and thats really something that would bug me considering the amounts of games i play.

be honest someone came up to you and said choose between these 2 which 1 would you pick?

I would pick the Barco Cine 9 but not because of the bandwidth differences. That was my reason for the other post above: The bandwidth differences are not relevant. They're not reasons to pick one over the other.

I would pick the Barco Cine 9 over the G90 because the Cine 9 does not have parts that cannot be fixed (G90 has a board that is known to be impossible to find/fix) and because I've always owned Barco's and am very familiar with them. The learning curve for me would be close to zero.

Cheap G90's with toasty tubes can be bought fairly cheaply now and a working YA scavenged from those units. I'm pretty sure we won't be hearing of too many more IC421 meltdowns given that most of the failures have occurred within 1500 chassis hours.

Given the choice I too would take the Cine 9, but not a 909 (just as noisy as the G90 and lenses aren't color filtered).

I have seen both... literally for months at a time...

My former employer had a G90 on display, and replaced it ( cause it sold to an important customer) with a Runco DTV 1200.

The performance difference was razor close. I preferred the 90, but as i said.... I'd be thrilled to own either.
