I just bought another ES machine. I'm not sure what to do with it but it might be a good starter for one of my friends.

It's a *great* starter. Small, easy to mount, pretty easy to set up, nearly silent, and throws a darn nice picture for a $60 projector. Laughing

My Dwin had color-filtered lenses, though. Not sure what it would look like without those. Nice score anyway!

bd600 that throws a nice 1080i/480p pic (actually I can still see scan lines at 600p)
also I installed another bd600 for my father who still uses it.

I sold my 1209s/E 5 years back. Got a new house 2 years ago and installed bg800 which broke a few weeks after then 1100 which also died shortly. I loved the 1100 but wish I could find a bg801s to swap boards for a upgrade as I have a set of new 9' 146a tubes to put in it when I can fix it.

The 1209 by all accounts is a very nice set. How would you say 1080i PQ compares to the ES machines you have had or seen?

I've had a few ES machines...the Dwin 700 was definitely the best. It's all about the tubes with an ES set...they will lose focus and ouptut over time.

It's quite funny to hear all the comments like "great pic" or "looks great"....well, if you have nothing to compare it to..sure, it might look great. But...compared to something as simple as a 6PG...it's not in the same league. Perhaps upscaled DVD could look pretty good on an ES set...but HD has to be watched on an EM set.

I would agree that PQ comments are very subjective unless you have had or have or at least have seen PQ on a EM set. I have also seen many comments in various threads that a lot of the sharpness in EM sets can only be appreciated in still shots and is lost in full motion so these are some of the reasons I ask this question.

you can't compare a bd600 to 1209 using 1080i. Scan lines are just too visible with the 1209. The bd600 I would say looked better at 1080i as it is the limit of those 7" ES tubes. I should mention that I had noritar 22x all glass lenses on that bd600 and it had mint tubes. Also aside from all analog convergence the bd600 has very clean and stable raster which is cleaner than the 800 and 1100. If the ES set has good tubes 1080i looks great in my opinion. It all is the condition of the tubes though. Lenses do make a big difference, especially if you have a sony 12xx.

My last CRT was a Sony 1272Q with the road case. I picked it up for a WHOPPING dollar off ebay, and if it would have been able to be more clearly focused I think I would have kept it since It could do 720p, but the focus was just not there for my satisfcation so I gave it to a friend who uses it mainly for SD Movie viewing which it looks exellent for that, especially on a 135" Screen!

Ill, give the 1272Q one thing though, It was as stable and reliable as you could want, I just wish my 9PG was built by sony Razz

1080i is just some common ground to try and get a PQ comparison so if not a 1209 then perhaps some other EM set at 1080i for comparison.

Yep, a Sony 1272, super machine (well at least i think so) Bit soft in the focus, especially with those in game menus playing through the xbox 360 ..but hey it's cheap!
