Mark, can we change your name to downer? |
Ok, just to make you happy..
We watched Avatar on the weekend on my XG LC.
And it was STUNNING. It looked magic.
However, I really did miss the 3D. And the cinema still had more "pop" to the image (maybe a wide gamut or something?).
I checked it on my Plasma, and the colours were maybe a touch flat in comparison.
So yes, my CRT is still very, very good. Just needs more dimensions...

That' s right!
A CRT Projector looks magic!
The screen may not be that bright, the pixels may not be fixed but the final image is magic!
I have watched many movies on my Plasma TV and on my dad' s LCD TV. They both look impressive at first sight.
After a while the image looks boring and unpleasant. The colors look fake and flat, even though they are calibrated. I am tired of watching a movie on those sets.
On the other side, when watching a movie on CRT Projector I feel very happy and wish the movie never ends! Blacks are blacks, grescale is as it should be, colors are perfect, 3 dimensional!
Hope this helps... Have a nice day!
Thanasis

No -- he just has about 18 ways to write his name. Athanasios, Athan, Thanasis, Nashou, Tom (!?), ....

LOl, No, int he Greek culture their are many names for the single "Proper" Name.
Athanasios ,which is both are names , can be referred to as Thanasi, Nasos, Thanasaki,Saki, Nashou, etc.
I personally love when European Woman call me Thanasi, it sounds so sexy when they say it.

So is Athanasios an incredibly common/popular name, so people use lots of different variants to keep them all straight? Or do Greeks do that with ALL names because they just like having 10 different names for everybody?

I am happy to see you all great guys in this forum!
I am sure we' ll have a great time!
Dear garyfritz,
Name: Thanasis is popular in Greece but not the most popular one can find...
Lots of people have different names but all names are derived from the same. For eg. A-tha-nasi-os you can see Athansios, Thanasi, Nasi and many more!

LMAO! Actually, she is my wife's father's (passed away) girlfriend who re-married about 6 years after he passed away. Step-mom sounded better than trying to explain............

Funny. I was going to reply to your comment of "must be a crap plasma" and say, no, Mark, you must have a crappy set-up CRT.

Nope. My setup would be equal to the best setup XG-LC or G70 around, with the possible exception of Ryan's MP modded one.
Have you seen a late model Plasma with Bluray?

Yep and the stack trounces them.

G90 stack?
Off coarse it does.
I didn't mention 9"ers, or stacks or blends. Equal to the best 8" LC (which is a G70 or XG LC) around, except maybe Ryan's.

Yep. Ive compared my Hitachi and Philips plasmas to my JVC CRT RPTV using a Sony BluRay on all 3 and the only enjoyable picture is on the JVC.
Now that doesn't mean I wont watch it on the plasma but I can see the difference. And I'm not real picky like I've said before so the difference doesnt bother me.
But other sources have to be considered when making statements about CRT vs Plasma because not everyone just watches BluRay. As soon as you start dropping in resolution the plasma starts looking worse while the CRT has much smaller variation.
Then when you take in breakdown and cost/availability of parts and repair, the plasma dump is filling up at a super fast rate (along with LCDs I might add).
And the big one that pertains to the OP, black level. Athough the plasma is much better then LCD, until plasma technology can do away with having to have a "prime", it will never have a true black because the panel is never completely off, like a CRT based device.
Also, hanging a plasma on the wall, even a larger one, say 55" or so, hardly qualifies that room as a home theater, at least not in my book. So to compare a plasma to a CRT projector in that respect doesn't even warrant a comparison.
So Mark, not to say that current Plasmas dont have a nice watchable picture there are still things that question their comparison to a CRT based device.
One thing you cant deny about them, they are flat.......

I'm curious Mark, what size and model plasma do you have and what size is your screen for projection?

Oh, one more thing. The main post subject and your initial comments were CRT vs plasma black levels. What does it matter if its a 8" or 9" machine in this aspect.
Or for that matter, if you want to talk picture quality, why would a stack or blend matter if they were 8" machines. Cause picture size from a decent 8" machine would trump a plasma in that category.

What did LCDs ever do to you? besides have poor on/off cr, a crappy picture and lengthy repair history

I used to counter when people would talk about flat panels that a projection screen is even thinner.
