Our HT and 6pg xtra got a great compliment this past weekend. Mr. Green

So, my wife’s step-mom and her new husband (both about 75 years old) stops by for a few days. They see the HT and can’t wait to watch something. Friday night we watch Star-Trek and they were blown away.

Saturday, we watch Avatar (first time for all of us) and we are ALL blown away. Thumbs Up Mr. Green

But the real compliment comes in at the end of Avatar. The husband says to my wife’s step-mom, “You see how the black levels look so good?!! Much better than that plasma we have.” Cool

I could not believe what I heard!! That was GREAT!!!! The guy is not a technical type person what-so-ever. But, he knew a good thing when he saw it!!

Compliment should be extended to Ken as he did some tuning (set-up) after I had rebuilt Confused the 6pg xtra about 10 times!!

Just being realistic.

We bang our chests about how good we think our 10-20 year old projectors are.....well, wake up, times have changed.

Only the very top end CRTs are competive now.

My $1700 plasma is just stunning. Black is black. Sharp, no pixels. The only fault I can find is it runs 24p material at 48hz, while the higher models in the range use 72 or 96hz. Flicker is *just* noticeable if I look at it out of the corner of my eye.

My 1251 was $2000, and this just spanks it six ways from Sunday (abet it's a smaller screen).

My XG is blurry compared to the Plasma, and compared to the (new) digital cinema projectors. Unless you have a G90/909/1209/9500, you are no longer better than ordinary consumer stuff.

+1 Mark. And -1 to the guys who cling to foolishness with religious ferocity - as I've said to AR: Just admit you like the stuff. I do; it's cool, and the price/performance for me is a winner. But me claiming my 808 will stomp a new $3k digital is like my claiming that my Saab 9-5 is faster than a new M3 just because I like it.

Here's the problem. When you guys use this comparison claim you are only thinking image quality. When I make comparison comments I use image, build, longevity and repair cost.

And in these comparison scenarios, CRT RULES............................. PERIOD!!!!!

Really? Wow! So do you have an 8' wide Plasma? Or is your XG running on a 50" diagonal screen?

If size is meaningless (not a factor) then we can set up bogus comparisons like this all day long.

Huge gains in performance have been realized in affordable flat panels in the past 2 years. I now have a flat panel in the BR and the picture is great with HD content. If I watch it in a completely dark room, I do notice the blacks are elevated compared to the CRT downstairs. It doesn't take much ambient light to mask the lack of real black and that is, after all how we watch it.

Flat Panel Pros: Light output, cost, sharpness, quietness and small footprint. Cons: Artifacts (esp with non native res. stuff), small viewing angle.

CRT PJ Pros: Blacks, image size, lack of artifacts, color accuracy, humungus viewing angle. Cons: Size, noise.

Comment heard a few days ago during first Avatar blackout: "Uh, your projecter went off...Whoa!

Crts and Plasma units produce their respective images using completely different technology. I am not sure they should even be compared. You either like what you see on a Plasma, LCD or LED or you like what you see on a CRT.

Aside from the fact that LCD and plasma are both fixed pixel displays whereas CRT is not, I think CRT and plasma are more similar than plasma and LCD since the former set are both phosphor-based displays as far as the kind of picture they generate.

To get it back on topic. I'm trying to work out what relation you would call your wife's, stepmother's, new husband.

Sure start shipping them across the pond and an continent, and see what customs/clearing agents haves to say, and how long they hold onto it. So as long a you don't have a dozen sets in storage to swap them out wholesale, and live in a location where you can drop the spend ones at no additional cost...

Current low cost king is the LG HS201, the new Casio 240/245 Hybrid is second in line, tough free CRT FPs are so much fun.
