So, I was in MC this morning getting some components for a new PC build for the wife. I happen to mention a particular motherboard and its price on NewEgg and the salesperson tells me they will match it. I was stunned, but he says they have to, because Fry's Electronics and NewEgg are their only competition.
I saved $20 for mumbling. 
Got a Gigabyte 1166 motherboard with USB 3.0, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and an i3 530 CPU. Also picked up an LG OEM Supermulti drive (BD-ROM, DVD-R/RW) and Windows 7 Professional. Just need a decent video card. Have the drives, case, and peripherals.
So, now I don't need to order from NewEgg anymore.

Do they sell the OEM versions of W7? Or will I be forced to continue to steal online?

Yes, I bought the OEM version of W7. They were were in plastic security cases hangong on an endcap peg for anyone to come and grab.

Good to know, but they hardly need to price match the egg...just about everything I've comparison shopped between MC and the egg has been the same price or cheaper at MC. MC rules

Trouble is I went into MC the other day for a BD drive. I wanted a BD reader only and did not want a writer. MC only sold BD burners and they didn't even have a regular old BD drive.
I ordered the LiteOn BD reader for $59 from NewEgg along with an external enclosure for another $20. Can't beat an external BD drive for $80.

Sure, the egg will certainly have more inventory than any given MC, but that's to be expected...what I find unbelievable is that again and again when I go to buy things, MC's price is equal to or undercuts mail order prices. They've consistently had much better prices on big ticket items like CPUs than Newegg - when the Intel core i7's launched in 2008 Newegg had the 920 for $280 and Microcenter had it for $230, and consistently put it on sale for $199

Strange, I had no problem buying a BD-ROM/DVD-R/RW drive w/software for $109. Were you looking specifically for a retail boxed product and avoiding an OEM offering?

No, I just asked them for a price on any BD drive. They didn't have any. Maybe different stock in different stores.

When I am in Atlanta, I usually price shop MC and have yet to find where they are consistently cheaper. When I recently built my new PC, they didn't have anything that was cheaper than Egg or Frys. You are correct that they were the cheapest when the new CPUs came out, but that was a loss leader to get you in the store. Not saying it was a bad deal, because it wasn't. It just isn't consistent. By the way, I am still kicking myself for not grabbing the I5 for $150.

This is really good news except you still have to pay tax. Before you say shipping from Egg, I live at least twenty five miles from MC. My gas would negate shipping prices. The best thing is that you can pick something up in person and return it if there is a problem.

My concern with NewEgg is that I've had to RE-create a new account TWICE with them because they kept managing to nuke my login on a pre-existing account. I've bought a lot of merchandise from them, and only returned on product in that several-year history with them. I just got tired of having to pretend I was a new customer all over again.
And this wasn't to suggest I wouldn't have bought from them again on this new build, but the convenience added to the price-matching made it easy. BTW, I picked up another Antec Sonata III 500 case & PS. It was selling for $139.99 at Fry's (MC was out of stock). This thing checked out at the register for $99.99 and I'm about to mail in a $20 rebate.

Consistently cheaper on most things? No, but consistently equal to the Egg on most everything and almost always cheaper for certain items? Yes, in my experience. They just did it again - they have the Core i7 860 AND the Core i7 930 on sale for $199! Newegg has them for $280 and $295 respectively! I don't care if it's a loss leader, or what - cheap money is all I'm seeing. As for consistency, Newegg still has the Core i7 920 for $280...more than a year and a half after its release.
Maybe MC will have slightly higher prices like a BD drive for $60 instead of $50 (fictional), but if you can save 30 percent on the high ticket items like a processor, it makes up for it. They also have stupid cheap RAM - several months ago I was pricing out a new build and could get 4GB 1333 for $80ish, I forget exactly how much.
There aren't many MC's and unless you live pretty close, it's definitely worth the time savings to order most stuff online, but I happen to live close to one and it's been a good resource. I just picked up an Acer Aspire One netbook there for $199 and I love it

That is funny that you mention RAM. I price shopped RAM and wanted to go with Frys or MC, so I didn't have to wait on shipping. Egg beat them both by $10. I agree that if you want to go all in one then the lower price on one item can make up the difference on a higher priced item. For me, I am usually looking for one item at a time. They do have the new X6s for $10 cheaper than the Egg, but Tiger direct was beating them both by $40.

I admit that there are several places around Atlanta (Gwinnett) where I am easily recognized. In fact, for places like Fry's and MC I make them wish they didn't have such good prices.
