That's me too. I watched all the extras on my boxed set of Star Wars IV - V - VI. The history & other stuff was interesting. But for 98% of all movies, I could care less about the family history of the lady who pushed the Danish cart on the movie set. Most of the extras that come with movies are a waste of bits IMHO.

When I'm WAITING on the wife or kids to get whatever and sit their butts down! Some times after the movie if it's not bed time.

Mostly no, because I don't want to know how it was done, it ruins the "feel" once I see how "Bullet time was done". But just about always I'll watch the outtakes, or bloopers, past that no thanks.

How deflated did you feel when you say the making of the Empire Strikes Back for the first time at the part where they show you how they did the AT-AT's on Hoth? That made me wish I could (Yoda) "Unlearn that which I had learned" (/Yoda)

I don't, I have never watched the Extras on any of the StarWars Movies. Shocked Shocked

And yes it is hard to resist, but I don't have to Unlearn this way, and my fantasy stays in place. Thumbs Up

I answered "occasionally". Generally, we don't watch much supplemental material, but if there was something really striking about the movie, we might. If it was something I thought was really, really impressive - say, the story, or the SFX, or the art direction - then, I might like to get some background, then.

Sometimes I get really, really engrossed in the story, and it's almost a big letdown when the movie is over... ala "Hey, I'm not read to come back to the real world, yet!" In those cases, sometimes I like to use the supplemental material to "decompress" after the movie... A little vignette from the directors or writers or actors serve that purpose well.

I'm a total film nerd, though... And a photography and creative nerd, too. I'm really fascinated with really good stories - especially really unique creative stories, or really creative art direction or photography. So, when I see a movie like that, then it's fun to hear from the people involved that made the creative decisions, and why. Those kinds of things can carry over into the work I do, my hobbies, etc.

But, we're probably talking something like 1 in 15 or 20 movies that I'm interested in background.

I look at it. I always watch the deleted scenes and am usually surprised they cut something I personally think would have helped the story. If I like a movie a lot and have watched it several times, I'll even run it with the commentary on (to hear why they chose to do certain things the way they did). I think I'm on of the few people out there that watched almost every single extra on the LOTR DVD's, there's a LOT of extra's on them.

Sometimes I do. The Pixar Story on Wall-E is awesome! I also just watched The Station Agent with commentary. This is one of my favorite films so I decided to try the commentary...hilarious!!!

You have to listen to the director's commentary on Donnie Darko.

It really helps to explain it.

Don't watch the Director's Cut version though - it's completely missing the ominous, freaky, atmosphere that makes the theatrical version so good. It's much clearer - it bangs you over the head with the explanation, but it's also vastly inferior (watch it second, if you must). Even the director prefers the original...better to just listen to the commentary on the original.

I'm not sure which I dislike more in paying for something I don't want: extras (full) or DVD/digital copies.

You know what I find annoying. Blockbuster with their "rental" copies of the movies with NO extra's. I wanted to see "The Hangover".
We could have rented it for $1 at Red Box. BUT we wanted to see the extra's on the disk and on disk two. So we paid $5.99 to rent the "full version" or so we thought and get the same single disk that red box had. SOB!

Ah, yes... The new trend of "rental" discs... I've noticed a fair number of those lately with the big "rental" stamped right on the disk. I'd assume that's more the movie studios creating a special "cheap" version of the Blu-ray for rental, rather than something Blockbuster is doing... Or, perhaps it's both in association. Whatever - it's annoying on some movies... Sometimes it's nice to see SOMETHING other than the movie itself.

We watched a movie last night, and watched most of the extras - Brothers.

OMG. Totally depressing, but riveting movie about a Marine that goes to Afghanistan and the devastation it does to his family when he doesn't return. It's much more complicated than that, but I won't say any more. It's a remake of a Danish film, so it was really interesting to me to hear the director's commentary about remaking it.

Like I said before, I used the 20-30 minute of watching the people that made the film, talk about the film, to come back to reality.
