Luckily, moving up to HD from line doubling is about as cheap as it gets. If you have a Bluray player, a simple HD Fury II is all you need, which can be had for less than $200 right here on this site. It has RGBHV OP along with component - switchable - and as long as you don't see a need to fine tune your BD player's color schemes, that's all you need to play Bluray movies.
Any cable or satellite STB that puts out HDMI is then available as well, and fine OTA tuners can be had for less than $150, which put out on component, which any older HDready has. With an upgrade to the new HD Fury III, multiple HDMI inputs are switchable.
Some satellites now lease their boxes. Cable may charge an extra $5-10/month for the HD versions of their programming, so that may still keep her away for now, but as soon as her situation changes she's ready...

Even us in the Antipodes have been watching HD for about 7 years - and back then we had to download TS files from US cable.
It's the 21st century. No one with a projector is watching SD. |
Wow! That's some dedication to HD!
About then I had the chance to share some "quality time" with a knockout from Brazil I had known for many years but who didn't live here, and she was utterly captivated by the HD on my Panasonic 65". They had nothing like that there. That was why I had to approach the Minister at CES and offer my help in any way I could. So Brazil was way behind even you!
