I know this used to be all the rage, but you dont hear about it so much today. I'd think it's the Bee's knees for htpc's.
So with the self contained units out now, does anyone liquid cool???
Thanks!

Hear about it anymore? Go over to Anandtech forums or HardOCP, etc., and stp in the nearest Fry's Electronics. Oh, and get that junk outta yur errs.

I do use water cooling for my HTPC. The waterpump and radiator is hidden underneath "the second row" in my theater. I am not sure I really need it today since your really dont need a lot of CPU power today when the GPU handles the h264 decoding but I had it installed when using overclocked AMD Athlon 64 cpu's and the when the stuff is already in place....

I haven't done any looking into water cooling in years and never got a water cooling system setup when I was looking due to cost. I'm curious how much I'd be looking at to setup a water cooling setup in my current system. I have a Socket AM3 setup, and no high end video card so I think all I'd need would be a pump, reservoir, and water block for the CPU, if the price is right I might look at setting one up just to cut noise as the CPU fans really spin up with a 600Mhz per core O/C.
Thanks,
Erik

For a HTPC it is just too much hassle.
A passive cooled system with HFX is a hassle when you want to change stuff (got one of those).
If you have water cooling you have a hassle by just moving the stuff
A friend had a reserator and he had problem with the plastic getting fragile and broke in the connections, so water was dripping (took a year or so).
The only thing I've seen that actully came pretty close to what I could accept was a self contained unit, it was basicly made for building into the computer chassi, you didn't need to have hoses going out from the chassis etc.
I saw two which a friend of my have/had but he got them as samples from the manufacturer (he's basicly the no.1 guy at Intel when it comes to overclocking sessions, liquid nitrogen and so on).
If you see an article about Intel breaking a new speed record etc. most likely it was during one of his sessions

Why not just use space on the other side of the interior wall of the home theater? A closet, etc.

Honestly, I don't see the need anymore for HTPC use. My AMD box cooler is pretty quiet. If I wanted to go even quieter, the I would spend the money on a big heat sink for around $50. My GT240 isn't even audible over the power and CPU fans. My biggest noise polluter is the DVD drive.

Doesn't take much of a computer these days to play hd video, flash, or even blu-rays....
The need for watercooling is pointless IMO. The only sound coming from my HTPC is the PSU, something watercooling doesn't address.

Well the plan is this....
I currently have an AMD dual core w/ 4gb of ram and a 1 tb drive as my main computer....
The plan is to .....
Re-purpose the AMD setup to MOM. Give her a new HD and setup w/ vista.
Build a new main Computer... setup to be able to handle photo editing and be the main server....
i5-750
8GB of Corsair memory
Gigabyte GA-P55M-Ud2 MOBO
Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Video
2 WD Caviar Green 1 TB Hard Drive
Antec True power 650 Power Supply
Pioneer Blu ray Burner
NEC EA23 LCD Monitor.
So that will be the main server.
Then
An atom mini itx setup for the b/r to stream media
and an htpc for the media room.

Why do you need that much horsepower in the video card?
True story. I walked away from the computer for a couple of minutes and when I returned I thought I had actually turned my computer off it is so quiet. This is my new computer and I am using the box AMD fan and the video card stock fan.
